Hi Just2CUSmile: If I understand your question correctly I would guess it needs to be set in either "live view mode"or the "video mode". Check your manual and see if I'm right. Those are the setting I need to use to see what I'm shooting if I want to use the LCD screen to focus while taking a picture. You can also use the "mirror lock up mode". All these various setting should be explained in your manual. Hope this answers your question or at least points you in the right direction.
"Live Mode" When checking the manual be sure to read about the focus magnification option too. It is especially great when you are on a tripod shooting macro.
"Video Mode"
Have a 60dso I hope I can help.
Activate the live view is on the MENU. Scroll over to the fourth red camera icon. LIVE VIEW ENABLE is on top, just enable it.
Live view switch is on the right side of the viewfinder, round button that looks like a little camera. Press it once, hear the mirror flip up and you are in live mode. Press it again and you are normal.
Couple of tips. This will shorten battery life some, a consideration if you plan to be out all day.
On the far right there are two blue buttons. The plus magnifies the live image, the minus demagnifies, (if that's a word).
Thank you for the comments ...going to try that when I get a chance

Canon 7D has a button on the back which simply activates / deactivates Live-View. See Pg 17 of your 60D manual - it will show you the button on the back of your camera that does the same - upper center of your camera back - little picture of the view screen with a red dot next to it. IF the 60D is like the 7D - the camera will only stay in Live-View mode for about 2 minutes before dropping the mirror back down. This is because the electromagnet that holds the mirror up uses lots of energy AND because it tends to get 'warm' with continued activation.

There is a button on the right of the rear of the camera that looks like a tv screen that is half clear half black. If you click the button the mirror locks up (sounds as if you are taking a picture) and then you can see the image in the viewfinder. Take the picture as you normlly would. Hope this helped.
