Thank you. I know that we are participating in DOF lesson but I can't see taking a picture that has no subject matter - even for a lesson. I got lucky and spotted this arangement from my sisters front porch today. I'm house/dog sitting for her and she has a beautiful home.

Flowers in front are the focal point (white flowers)
#1 F2.8 1/1600 ISO 100
blurred background and surrounding subjects not focused
#2 F8 1/200 ISO 100
Much more DOF subjects background subject much sharper
#3 F22 1/25 ISO 100
background in focus; less contrast and detail
#4 F16 1/50 ISO 100
Average looking picture but flat to me
I like some out of focus subjects. I'll try f4 next time because I think that would be the sweet spot for the subject matter in this image.

I like the f22 shot. The deep subjects are in focus and I like the sharp background. It is a very eye catching shot.

RMM...thanks so much for the suggestion. After reviewing all of the posts, I realized I should have done exactly what you suggest. I will do that and see what results I get!
Good luck with the results. While not addressing you specifically, I see that MWAC made a similar suggestion.

Thanks MWAC for taking your time to pull all of this together for us! This is exactly what I need to further my skills. I for one am very appreciative of your time and efforts. This is my first time uploading photos, so please advise if there is something I need to do differently.
#1 F4.5 1/8 ISO800
#2 F29 4 ISO 800
#3 F8 1/3 ISO 800
#4 F16 1.3 ISO 800
What I noticed?....the larger the aperture, the less crisp the detail. There are also minor differences with the lighting. I think I liked #4 best in the end and I thought I'd like #2 b/c I tend to like very clear, close up shots. You can see the details of the fur with the higher aperture shots. THANKS for the assignment! I have struggled to get this concept down...find it very confusing!

moneilldog, you'll get much more out of this lesson if you put your subject farther away from the background. Your bear was right next to the wall. Prop it up several feet from the wall, or some other object, focus on the bear and take your shots, and you'll see how aperture affects the depth of field, i.e., sharpness of focus, of objects that aren't close to the subject.

RMM...tried to reply to your post, still new to UHH. THANK you for your suggestions. I will try again. I really appreciate your help:) This lesson has been so helpful and has truly demonstrated the concepts of aperture and DOF in a tangible way. Looking forward to what's next!

Perhaps I am splitting hairs here, but you asked for comments and I wanted to critique, not criticize your valuable Rockin What you Got project. Good going!
Glad you mentioned these things, Julian. I was going to, but you said it better than I could have.
MWAC, I hope you haven't taken these corrections as negative, because they are clearly meant to be constructive. You've hit upon a great idea, here. This endeavor will get even better if you allow corrections and contributions to your text.

On Sony it is "A" for aperture priority, "S" for shutter speed priority and "M" for manual. Or have you limited participation to only canon and nikon users? What about Panasonic and Olympus shooters?
REALLY? I guess it's true you can't please everyone.
It seems there is a more inclusive way to word things when talking about all camera users.
umm not to be witchy but if you don't like the way I word a tutorial I took time out of my day to write, you could not post in it or better yet take the time to write your own. It simply amazes me that I (or anyone else for that matter) takes time out of their day to do something nice for other members and people find fault with it.
Somedays it just doesn't pay to be nice I guess.

MWAC! This lesson idea is great! Don't worry about the folks who nit pick - you're doing a great service to those who are just getting started.
One little problem - my bridge camera doesn't go over f8 - it's a fixed lens - so I, and some others will have to start with our lowest f number and maybe the next f number would be f4, then f8 for the highest f number. If and when I post, I'll use these f numbers, then a random f number for the last. I'll, also, try to title the f number above the pic. Good luck - I taught basic B&W film photography for ten years at night at a voc-tech HS back in NJ. TTYL! Your avatar looks like she could be a friend's daughter or granddaughter of mine back in NJ, who moved out to the Southwest in the eighties!
Hi, This is the first forum I have ever participated in. I'm not sure if I qualify for this course as I have a Canon S3 IS, the highest Aperture I can get is f8 and the lowest f2.8, also it doesn't display the ISO when in AV Mode. I have uploaded 4 photos of the Liquid Amber in my garden anyway. Just let me know if I can't join in on this one.
Thanks
Anne
