Salvaging

Original photo shot from a moving train... nothing special. Thought's on salvaging photos by cropping for the best bits.
The larger crop bothered me with the bow in the rail under the windows and also I could not make the crop symmetrical above the rail, so there is more wood on one side than the other. My camera angle probably didn't help.

So I cropped more... Trying for the minimalist look! Appears more balanced, but the angles still wrong.
Would you have bothered?
PP done in Topaz Adjust/LR

Islandgal, they're both interesting images, so yes, I would spend the time to straighten them.

Of we could play with yours, Trish?

In PS Elements I have camera distortion controls. I have only attempted to use them a couple of times. They were helpful here, but as you can see, I still don't have perfected.

Plus straighten, plus remove the off-set red vertical bars on railings, plus clone out the eaves shadows in upper corners. Nik filters to finish. Now that they're uploaded, I see they need more tweaking with selective brightness. But you may not care for any of these anyway - lol.

Thank you, though! Fascinating and educational to work on.

Original photo shot from a moving train... nothing... (show quote)

Absolutely I'd have bothered! My pick, though, would be your first one. It's true there is no way to make it perfectly symmetrical* but it's a quirky shot anyway. I find the tighter crop less interesting. If you'd been able to get out of the train you'd have been able to center it, but ya takes yer pitcher wiv the conditions ya gots . I love the red rail that picks up the red in the window frames, plus the wood in the railing that picks up the wood in the building. I would not even have seen the bow had you not mentioned it, and it bothers me not at all. The building itself is saggy due to age. It is great and I would hope that it would have caught my eye, especially from a moving train.

*Edit: Linda made it symmetrical, and very well too, but she had to take the red stanchions out of the rail and I liked them.

They should be easy to paint back in, asymmetrical or symmetrical

I like the download crop #2 Linda, the sign gives the image added interest, also the detailed carving on the sign... why didn't I think of that! The extra wood, compared with cropping tight actually boosts the photo with its rawness. More than likely wood milled by the same forestry division. I'm still bothered by the curver in the rail.. maybe it's natural? I will look into the distortion controls, thank you for sharing that.

That building was actually in pretty good shape chuck, they knew how to build in those days and the cedar wood would make it last a few generations! Thanks for dropping by!

I like the one, where it shows more building and some background. Plus, it shows that the building has a deck that goes around it, and puts the windows in perspective. With a little straightening, taking out the pole on the right side, and some of the same PP as the others, this would be my choice.. I see why you took the photo, it is an interesting wooden building! It is looks good to me without the crop. Nice shot. TG

I like no 1 myself.

Symmetry can frequently make an interesting foto less interesting, as here.
