I like to put those thin plastic shields on any LCDs I have - cell phone, camera, etc. You can sometimes buy ones made specifically for the device, but they can be more expensive than the route I have taken.
I got one sheet of material to protect the screen of an iPad. It cost about $18.00, and I can cut it into smaller pieces to cover eight or ten smaller screens. The product I got is the Zagg InvisibleSHIELD. It is the best film I have come across. It goes on easily and makes a very smooth, bubble-free surface. It is also incredibly tough and durable. Unlike others I have used, it will take the abuse itself and not pass the scratches on to the LCD. I have never had one peel or start to lift, yet it can be removed very easily if you want. I still have touch screen control, and visibility is not impaired.
Here here!! Cheap and effective insurance.
Like a seat belt for your expensive-to-replace LCD.

I also keep the removable plastic screen over my LCD - belt and suspenders.

That's interesting. I use the protectors on my iPhone and now my LCD. The iPhone ones are like $10 for three of them at walmart and I have problems with them wanting to peel when I put my case back around my phone. The one I paid like 99 cents for on ebay for my camera I can't even tell is on there. I may have to take your tip and try cutting my own to fit my phone from now on.
The protectors I have on my cameras are glass. The ones I purchased for the Nikon D60 and the Sony A55 came from Amazon for about 7 bucks. The one for the Sony A35 I picked up on EBay. They seem to me to be clearer and easier to clean than the plastic protector I have on my phones. They also are a lot easier to install.
Good point. The ones I use for my 7D and 5D Mark III are also glass -- a Corning clear ceramic to be exact, nicknamed "Gorilla Glass". Very very thin sheet. Gorilla Glass is widely used on smart phones. Very strong and scratch resistant. Hopefully one day Canon and Nikon will use them instead of Polycarbonate (Lexan) to cover their LCDs.

I have the thin glass ones on my camera LCDs. It really helps especially when it comes time to sell the camera. I really hate to get little gouges in my LCD screens.

I look on ebay occasionally, and there is always a camera or two described as having "tiny scratches" on the LCD. Those cameras do not get the highest prices.
I use Zagg's also , best I have found. Better to see through than the plastic protectors and they dont crack or break.
