In the fall we set our nets to catch fish called spots. Not very big but a tasty little critter. Several years ago at work my friends and I were talking about setting our nets on the coming weekend. A new fella just transferred from up north was listening and ask if he could go with us. We agreed to meet at the boat landing and invited the new guy to go with us. Our first three sets we only caught about five fish. The new fella said we were setting our nets all wrong and that's not how they do it up north. He proposed we let him show us how to fish a net correctly but any fish we caught was his to take home. Being southern gentlemen as we are we agreed. He kinda set the net in a horseshoe pattern which we never do for spots. On his first set I thing he caught around eighty fish. He was so happy and telling us that's the way to do it! He was then ready to go home and clean his fish and put up for the winter. I have to admit he took home some of the prettiest Menhaden I have ever seen. He never asked to go again.

Are they as "tasty" as mackerel? In Maine they use menhaden for lobster bait.

The tarpon love Menhaden - don't think they have ever made anyone's table!
As I recall, menhaden are used for fish meal and commercial oil. The fish meal is probably for fertilizer. Don't know where or how the oil is used.

Being from the Southern Interior of BC I have never heard of 'Menhaden' but a 'mossbunker' don't look to tasty
