I drove that highway westbound in 2012 and it is awesome! I was told that the construction was engineered to make the smallest impact on the environment possible while preserving the beauty of the canyon. I believe they achieved their goal. Here's one of mine:

Nice shot, I must have been shooting to the side at that point, as I have a shot just before entering the tunnel. Re: the roadway, I think the curving form actually enhances the natural beauty in many places.

Eastbound on I-70, beginning just East of Glenwood Springs.
Shucks. You drove right by the exit to the parking lot for Hanging Lake, a moderate 25-30 minute hike up from the canyon floor to a small secluded lake with a small waterfall entering over a shelf.

IowaGuy, you obviously don't understand the situation. If it was a 5 minute walk, I couldn't make it. I'll have to settle for looking at photos of the waterfall taken by someone else. Two spinal injections have helped tremendously, and there's the option of surgery in the future, so perhaps one day I can do it on my own.
On our first pass through I was driving and the sign had a "full parking area" on it, so it would have been a no-go anyway.

Thank you for the compliment Sue. It is one those places you wonder why you never heard of it when you see it for the first time. Only 15 miles, but Oh My!
I felt the same way. I went through there a few years before the Hot shots fire crew was killed there.

I don't recall any fire crew disaster. I can't imagine sending a fire crew into that terrain. Some wind generated by the fire itself, and Katy-bar-the-door!

Thank you Lenny P, I appreciate the compliment.
I enjoyed your tour. Brought back memories of our trip through in 2011. It was my wife's first time out west and she was like a little kid. What amazed me was the Interstate was at different elevations. Westbound above and Eastbound below on a few stretches. Your turning around to take it all in again was a great idea...I'll have to remember to do that myself next time.

Thanks for your experience James 56. We were fortunate that our destination was about 30 miles East of the upper end of the canyon, so had time the next two days to make a round trip through just for photos.
