THE sky is not blue enough and the subject is not interesting, enough, otherwise, it's just o.k. RJM

Neil, any time I look at a picture for more than a glance I have to think there's something there. The trouble is, I'm not sophisticated enough to always know what. There's something here, but I sense there's also something missing, but I'm not sure what. I see where I think you wanted to go. It's a restful image, somehow sharp and soft at the same time. I think it's very well composed, balanced, and generally nice to look at, but I think it needs something. If I'd made it I think I might try a slight dark vignette (5-7%), or a radial gradation, brighter in the center. As it is, it seems to lack something to keep the eye in the frame.

I like this very much Neil. At first I wished for a more prominent pine cone (or something) to surprise us a little, but then I began to appreciate what you've presented: a tranquil, peaceful scene. The composition is very appealing to me with the space at the edges and the nicely arranged (tidy) lines. The understated blue color is also perfect for the gentle mood.

If silhouette is what you were after, you have achieved your goal neilds, for me it needs some detail brought out of the shadows.

Thank for your views RJM. I did lower the intensity of the sky, as I knew that otherwise I'd get comments that I had enhanced it. Win some, lose some. The subject is something that not everyone is into. I appreciate your honesty, that's what I post in this Section for.

Thank you for your analysis Chuck. This is something that does not lend itself to overthinking - I put this type of rendition in the KISS category. Your suggestions are something I'm going to play with and see what comes out.

Thank you Linda. This was taken at the rest area just north of Yakima. I took similar shots of the foliage of three trees there, and this was the only one that came out like I wanted.

I assume you looked at the download Frank. I brought out the shadows until the green needles became an un-natural pale green, then backed off, but did get some detail out of the branches. I see where you're coming from...

These comments relate a bit to my last discussion topic, "why do you post photos to FYC."

Doing an edit because someone else might like or not like seems a slippery slope to me. I love when folks help me refine my vision (whether just a crop or more detailed edit) but I have come to realize, after far too many thousands of hours on UHH - lol, that you can never please everyone...and why should you?

Thoroughly chew on well-meaning suggestions and feedback and then spit out what doesn't taste good

Linda, what goes on my wall, or in my albums, is the best I can do for what I want. I've been thinking about possible PP methods, and am going to try to get the sky back to its original deep blue, and also bring out the full texture and brown color of the branches. Until then what I presented here will have to do. So, why post here now? I'm always interested in the views of others and "Thoroughly chew on all suggestions and feedback and then spit out what doesn't taste good".

And I appreciate the way in which you responded to my Brief, direct, critique. Maybe, had you NOT lightened the sky color, it may have "grabbed me", But, as you said, ya win some & ya lose some. I also am impressed that other hogs didn't rip me a new CANAL for my abrupt-ness. It seems to me that I could have angered some, I'm glad that didn't happen,I win some, and i lost some, but learned some. thanks to Very wise folks (some)that hang out at the hog. Thanks to all for your patience . RJM

If anyone posts on this Section and can't stand the heat they posted in the wrong place. We all appreciate the truth, rather than sugar pills.
Cheers, Neil

Neil, this is the kind of picture I would have taken. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.I do like the sky is just blue no clouds it gives it a simple clean background. My only suggestion I like have maybe a slightly closer shot of the branches.
