I would recommend the 580EX II or 600EX-RT. It is my thought that the first flash should be the best OEM model I can afford.

I use the 580EXII, 420EX, and 550EX in that order of preference. In portrait settings I use the 580EX II and a few old Vivitar flashes with umbrellas.

Another one to consider that's not been mentioned is the 430EX II

Not quite as feature rich as the 580EX II but a good value; I have one and love it.

If you want the best flash possible for the 5DmII, then go with the 580EX II. The newer 600RT is technically a better flash, but has features that the 5D is unable to take advantage of.

I didn't mention the 430EX because I have never used one and I don't feel like I can recommend an item that I don't have first hand knowledge about.

The 430EX does have features that the older 420EX does not. There are many good reviews for the 430EX, several of them compare the features of both the 580EX and the 430EX.

If you want the best, get the newest. The 600.

I agree. I have one 580ex ii and two 420ex's. I rarely use flash and should probably sell the 420's but the 580 is my main unit, because of it's power.

honestly the best speedlight for the 5D is the one you can afford and the one you will use.

Figure out your budget, look at whats available in that budget and purchase the top recommended one. Just make sure it has a head that can be tiltled and turned so you can bounce your flash.

I use the 430exii and a 430ex, both are fine speedlights for my use.

the most important item that you neglected to mention is what are you going to do with this light. Without this information it is difficult to make any suggestions. There are many brands of lights and many sizes. Each light has strong and not so strong features. what do you want this light to be able to do?

I have the 600, the 580x2,the 430x2 and the 270. Again, if you want the best, it will be the 600. Someone mentioned the 430's. Good flash, will slave but not master. reasonable price used. The 580's are good but more of a pain figuring the settings unless you use them alot. The 600 easier to navigate, more reach and RF. Can still master the 580 and 430. Of these I mean the ex version II. Get the 600 to build your flash collection around.
