I took this shot while on the Hackensack River. It is the Medowlands by Giant stadium. Construction is going on and the cranes caught my eye. Reminded me a scene from Star Wars. FYC thoughts and or suggestions.

Nice image,
Suggestions: more fo the cranes , less river, if possible get the Sun behind the cranes and maybe wait for the fog to clear ( it makes the cranes appear out of focus). Shoot many different views when possible.

Thanks for the suggestions. However it was a one shot deal. I can not go back for a retry. I could try cropping out some of the river

I find these types of cranes to be industrial beauties, especially in silhouette, so your image is interesting and appealing to me.

I'll pm you my idea for cropping to give them a bit more prominence in the frame. Personally, I'd retain the water because it's so pretty with the sun's reflection and the textures.

Lovely golden sunset color!

Thanks, Frank. My idea was to bring the cranes into more prominence by cropping some of the left side and some of the sky. I also thought the building on the left made a good place to set that edge - a balance to the large building on the right. For me, there was no problem with losing some of the sky (easier for me to cut out other people's skies than my own lol).

Thanks again!

Yes, I like the water, but the sky above the sun wasn't doing anything other than occupying space.

I like too. I have a tendency not to crop enough

Thanks, Frank. It's really just deciding which story to tell. I often shoot broad vistas, with no inclination to trim anything

In looking at your crop again, I realize that you removed part of the building on the right ... that is great because it is still a large building, but now it occupies a little less real estate of the image {and that building is not the focus of this view}. You also left some clear space to the left of the building on the left; I wouldn't have thought of that, but it retains some of the asymmetry of the original scene.

This works for me. I really like the color. It was the perfect time of day to take this photo. You also got the sun without totally blowing out that part of the image. It leaves everything in silhouette which is a very dramatic treatment of this subject. Well done.

Yeah this view was just telling at me to take the shot. Lol Another angle or a few minutes earlier I think the results would have been so much different. I don't t think I would have liked as !uch

Its an FYC fodder shot Frank. All a bit too artistic for me. Like whats the attraction in cranes Billy asks? What does one do with a shot like this after seeking guidance as to its merits on FYC? In fact where would one show it apart from FYC?
So impact wise it has little for me. The sunset is far from spectacular and cranes do not float this guys boat. Composition wise Im still not into the image in any way but Linda's idea does seem to provide an improvement just hard pushed to say what. Technically Mr Nikon did a superb job as only he can when the user is as profficient as our man here.
I think for Star Wars getting that Vulcan with the pointy ears in the foreground may have helped.
