I can barely make sense of what you are saying. First things first.....What type of photography you do? Are you referring to the Canon 70D?

My husband and I both have the Canon 70D, and we both use primarily two lenses. The Tamron 18-300 for everyday use, as it's a very good lens, not perfect, as there is some barreling at 300mm. But it's a great lens, as it has a beautiful range, and is not large or heavy. Also, we have the Tokina 11-16 for wide angle shots. The Tokina is an excellent lens, and has great reviews.

Good luck with your search, hope this helps.

Lauren

Without knowing what and how you shoot, all I can say is that for a camera such as the 70D Canon makes two well regarded lenses that have very useful focal lengths: The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for about $600 and the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for about $700. Either would make a good general purpose walk-around lens for your camera, and both are designed for your camera's sensor size, so you are not paying for more then you need.
It would be helpful to know your experience level and what it is you plan to shoot so that responses to your question could be more exact.

Why do you need IS? Or think you need IS?

The 2 lenses I use most of the time with crop and full frame with canon. 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8
I really like them both. I do quite a bit of low light photography so I would buy a 2.8 instead of a f4

You should buy an Olympus OMD E-M5 Mk II and 14-150mm lens. The Olympus is image stabilized at the sensor, and has a high resolution mode that can make the sweat on your beer bottle glisten.

Why she should? Because you have one? She already has a Canon 70D which she CLEARLY says she likes it. She already has a camera system SUPERIOR to the one you mentioned, specially in the glass department.

This is a very reasonable financial choice. If on the other hand he plans to upgrade to full frame the EF-S lens will be a boat anchors.

Well, the OP didn't give us much info. If an upgrade to FF does take place at some time the lens would be about as useful as the 70D. It's a pretty safe bet that either both would be sold or both kept as backup. They would still be of use either to the OP or to a buyer.

I agree. I cannot stand some of the awful writing here. Some people do not know better while others think it is cute. There is no excuse for either but then again, command of the English language has nothing to do with the command of photography and this place is about the latter.

As has been pointed out, knowing what you photograph would help in our recommending a new lens to you. Nonetheless, you omit some very important things here. Just what is your current lens? We need to know the focal length of the current lens and what you do not like about it other than it is cumbersome. Is it too big, too heavy or too complicated?

The 70-200 is a pretty hefty lens and if your current lens is already cumbersome, I doubt you will find the 70-200 better. Read the specifications on the lenses. Another point is that unless you want to use this lens outside only and are aware of the narrow zoom of this lens, you would be getting excellent optics but limited utility. I recommend getting the f/2.8 70-200 because you can then use it inside.

However, if you want a general purpose, walk-around lens, then consider an 18-135, 18-200, 18-250 or 18-300 lens. These are all smaller and lighter than the 70-200 f/4 one and a lot more versatile. They are also about the same speed and have pretty good optics. As for brand, you might want to look at Sigma or Tamron, both of which get excellent reviews. They are comparable to what Canon makes but for substantially less money.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Canon offers a 70-200mm f/4 lens with image stabilization. It gets good reviews. Check it out. Here's one review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/70-200mm-f4-is.htm

The Sigma or Canon 24-105mm f/4 lenses may suit your needs, too. I've found I can do 95 percent of my photography with a lens of 24-105mm.

Good luck.

It is so difficult for me to give you an answer. What is going to be the use of the new lens? What lens did you buy with an f2 aperture and which was the intended use for that lens?
We buy lenses that we need for our work I do not remember buying a lens simply because it was very sharp.
If you really want to get confused simply look at the many opinions about different lenses in the Internet. That alone will refrain you from buying many lenses.

The 70D is very good ! The 70-200 f4 L is a GREAT lens.

If you get one, make sure you get a cheaper third party tripod collar, a 1.4X tele extender ( third party Kenko Pro or Tamron SP are OK ), and a Canon 500D close up lens for close work.
