My daughter has a Canon 20D. Can this camera be set up for back button focusing?

I read up on this by doing a Google search on "Back button focus on Canon 20D" and found that on the 20D you set it with CF4 (custom function 4) and it will make the * button the focus button. On newer Canon models it makes the AF-ON button the focus button. Hope this helps. You can read further by doing the search above.

Just hope I can convince my daughter to make the switch to bbf. Once there I'm sure she'l never go back to shutter focus. Thanks again Laura,

I know I never went back and even convinced my Dad to go that way and he loves it!

I was able to change my canon SL1 to back button focus in the method mentioned above. It did not have a dedicated AF button so I had to assign one. But it is really the best method to take photos in. unfortunately I can not find a way to do this on my Olympus Om10...and I am unhappy about that.

Wow, that's hard to believe that a newer camera model won't accommodate BBF.

A big shooter in my camera club still uses a Canon 20D on his trips all over the world. The Canon 20D is well over 10 years old. It's an 8MP noisy crop sensor camera. When he exhibits his work the subject matter is great but technically the photos could be called horrible by today's standards. Can someone please tell me the rationale for still using this camera?

Maybe she's just learning? Maybe it was a gift? Maybe she likes it? Many, many reasons.

I understand if it is a beginner who was given the camera. But for anyone, having the right tool usually yields better results. And my thought is, for beginners it's even more important.

I play tennis and have noted that beginner rackets are demonstrably inferior to even mid-range rackets. A decent racket will often allow you to return a shot even if you mis-hit it while the older, cheaper racket will not. They're not made with better materials or technology designed to help your game. So who needs a tool to be more forgiving, the beginner or the pro? And who is going to be discouraged easier? And who needs more of a lift to their game that the newer technology can provide?

Starting a beginner out right is important.

Not everyone is comfortable with BBF. Even some advanced photographers I know don't use it.

That's very true...some people take to it right away and others can't get comfortable. I remember when I first changed to BBF, the first few times I picked my camera back up I couldn't figure out why my shutter button didn't work!
