Fortunately I turned on the light this morning when I stepped out of the garage to feed the neighborhood cats. I almost walked into this big boy right at eye level! Had I done so, I would have been writing this from my hospital room if they were able to resuscitate me! Sorry that the DOF is so shallow. I didn't realize that he was that thick.

European cross orb weaver.
A common and very beneficial female Cross Orbweaver (Araneus diadematus):
http://www.spiders.us/species/araneus-diadematusShe should remain in the same general area (assuming her web is not destroyed), as orbweavers repair their webs each evening to catch insects at night and early morning.
Ms. Weaver is safe and sound. She scurried off into a crack in the siding. Her orb is less so since it spanned the entire doorway. She will have ample time to spin her snare once more before I step into that trap again.

I don't like mosquitos or midges but they're favorite appetizers for these girls.

Good point. I see them often from late summer into fall. I must confess I destroy their webs and bludgeon them at every opportunity. I am extremely allergic to spider bites.

That was a song by Ray Stevens. Great song, very humorous.

Jim Stafford was the singer and songwriter that produced this song.
Impressive spider. Nice images.

Nice shots, Bob! Glad you didn't walk into her!
Well, she is still here...three days in a row. It is apparent that either she, the cats, or I need to adjust our schedule. I see three possible scenarios: 1) Ms. Spider gets tired of me destroying her web and moves to a more comfortable site. 2) the cats get tired of waiting while I go get my camera and play with it. 3) I forget that she is there and walk into the web in the darkness. If #3 is the occurrence my wife will have a significant amount of slightly used photographic equip to dispose of.
