Yes, there is definitely more detail that can be seen on moon phases that are less than a full moon.

The clear north Idaho night skies are good here which helps a little to get
a good focused shot of the moon. I'm hanging in there at 72, but my steadiness will
not last forever.

The combination of a good pistol handle grip attached to my lens helps me to get a good
steady shot and the unique Canon 5Dsr mirror set-up and the Canon 100-400 II, with it's
great 4 stop image stabilization and good balance make this fairly easy to get
a good steady shot.
