Phidippus apacheanus. When I first saw it, I thought it was a velvet ant, even though I have only seen them on the ground, and this jumper was on a tall weed.

A friend of mine Don told me of a location for photographing these specific jumpers here in florida. I traveled about 125miles 2 yrs. ago to shoot these guys. It was well worth the trip. Nice that you can find them near your location.... Keep an eye out as they come in different color variations, from solid yellow, to orange to red and then these colors all inter mixed with black as well. If you find one, you will find more. They like cactus as well, so if any cactus in the area check them out. I normally use a small branch to tickle them out of hiding. Jumpers are good at hiding and if the see you they will move to the under side of the cactus leaf. I gently move the branch under and against the bottom of the leaves to tickle one out if hiding..

thanks martin, I have not been back to the place because of the rain. It is a muddy meadow with nothing but weeds up to 4-ft tall, and a swampy area on the edge. I have to wait before I can get back to that spot.

Muddy meadow is even better.. You should find them in tightly woven little hammocks up in the weeds. Once you spot one hammock/over night sleeping quarters/they become easier to find.. Egg sacks and nest are much heavier woven, but easier to spot. If we's were neighbors Id be over in a heart beat.......
