Shoot Tight, and do try some available light photos in the church, there are ways to ad color in Photo Shop, try to think of what you would like taken at your wedding, then focous on Bride, and Groom, when posing groups, do make sure that the guys are not standing with their legs open as if on as horse, try putting one foot forward with the heel of shoe into the center of the other, awarkward, yes, most guys will cry, but your photos will have a nice touch, also keep all flowers in an even pattern if they wear glasses, do have them take them off, as some are tinted, The Best, George

If you shot tight how are you going to order what ever print size the bride, mother of the bride, mother-in-law has decided to order? Believe me they are not going to be happy if to get that print in an 8x10 they have to crop off what ever they deem important (like the groom, or half the brides dress).

Kind of like an accident on the highway, you really shouldn't look but you just can't help it.

No not really, use the entire frame, so when You do your enlargements there is less wasted space, just a preference I prefer, its like 35mm film fill in as much as you can. This is what is so unique about this site, there are so many ways to shoot different subjects, we all have our own input, and let the other photographer decide what and how they want to do photos, again just my preference. Thanks George

And this is why I roll my eyes whenever this subject (or portraiture in general) comes up....

it's like a bunch of red-canes banging around together trying to make some headway and nobody can see which way to go. :(

Unfortunately the only enlargements they or you will be able to make will be 8x12, 16x24, 32x48. Try printing an 8x10, 5x7, 11x14, 16x20 and on.....you will have to crop out people if shot tight.

There are some pretty fundamental rules when doing portraits and weddings. I know, rules are generally meant to broken or tweaked upon in photography, but the basics are just that. I think we have all seen some amazing portrait/wedding work,,,,and some that shouldn't be given away for free. My suggestion is to visit wedding photographers web sites, and view some of the work that is being presented. I'm sure you will see a vast difference in quality,,,,but you will get plenty of ideas.

I know everyone means well when they post suggestions, but if you are looking for posing and lighting ideas, pictures speak louder than words. If you need help with figuring out your camera or flash,,,lot's of good knowledgeable people on this site. To do a wedding successfully, a minimum amount of equipment is needed,,and by your post I'd say you don't meet that minimum (meaning flash primarily) and fast glass. Indoors,,,you may or may not have enough ambient light, and pushing your iso with your cameras is not necessarily the right answer.

Having said all that, if you are even remotely unsure of what you are doing, you should not be the primary photographer at a wedding. And yes, I know, she is the helper.

When shooting groups.......and if I have to use a wide angle because I have no other choice, I leave a lot of room on the sides for printing considerations later....but also, as good as optics have become, the wide angle distortion done to people in tightly framed shots is most unflattering.

Couple of tips for group poses, tell me men to hold their hands, right hand over left. Hands held behind back make the jackets pull. Tell gals holding flowers to point the flowers towards the camera like a flashlight....so you don't have to photoshop out the stems in post. Make sure the flowers are held up and are level ....form a leading line towards the bride group when possible. Don't use on-camera flash....ever, make sure candles, flowers, and other objects are not growing out of the bride's or groom's head.

Don't chimp - you don't have time....the reception is going on and everyone is anxious to get to the party. Take five shots and move to the next pose......KNOW these posed shots. We keep a list of them, check off when done. If you can, send a photographer to the reception, after the Church, gathering gear, loading the car and moving to the reception takes time, the bride and groom may beat you there......it's best to send a photog, immediately after the wedding to set up for the bridal party announcement shots as well as the food before the kids get to it.

Shoot Film.... avoid memory cards that fail. I am reminded of the local wedding photographer who shortly before a wedding switched to digital and shot a whole wedding on a 32 Gb card. Tried to upload the pics to his computer...memory card failed.

Brides parents were less than gracious when he suggested they do the wedding ceremony and reception over.

His assistant was shooting one of his film camera's so all was not lost, but he's been having trouble getting work locally since.

Use a camera that has a double memory card slot and if you can, engage both slots for writes concurrently. If not that, rotate slots by switching card slots in the menus. If no two card slots in the camera, manually rotate two or three 4 Gb cards.

I have never used a card bigger than 4 Gb and never intend to. Card counterfeiting does not pay off for the criminals at 4 Gb, whereas 32 and 64 Gb attract counterfeiters. BION... cards do fail.

Just buy your gear responsibly! .....just how many pics do you think a 4 gig card will hold, using a D800? Answer 50 raw files....if I load the other slot to take duplicates and we shoot are typical 1200 images, I would need to keep up with 48 cards......I would be more likely to lose a card to "where is that one" or accidentally write over one than lose a card to failure. We transfer 100,000 images into lightroom from all venues. I have NEVER lost images to a card failure that I was not able to salvage using card rescue...and I can count the card failures since 1999 when we added some digital equipment...on one hand.

I forgot to mention if you add video to the mix. I have a hard enough time keeping up with 32 and 64 gig cards.

I didn't mean to imply that there are no pros here...we've seen their work, we've seen their answers so I wouldn't name them by name, but I meant my remark in general...for every "pro" response, there are 5 others that are just "guesses-in-the-dark"....

I just goes to show you with enough effort you can get decent quality even using a Nickonn!
