Graduated ND filter example

I just bought a graduated ND filter and on the 'hog, we discuss a bunch of ways to deal with a "too bright sky" while taking sunrise or sunset shots. We do "bracketing" or "HDR'ing" and multiple exposures blended and all manner of post processing.

Here is an example of using a graduated ND filter.

Is that your video rpavich? Looks more like what I'd expect to see when using both a circularizing polarizer and a neutral density filter.

What brand / type did you purchase? I'm in the market for one for a new lens. So many choices.

Thanks rpavich!! That Hitech filter should fit one of my Cokin P series holders just fine then. I ordered one from B&H and will play with this filter at my next opportunity.

Yes....they fit the P holder (which I bought too.)

I ended up getting a variable ND, a 0.6 graduated ND also.

I can't wait to hit the sunsets and running water!!

Thanks for the heads up on ND filters --- have been considering them for quite a while now.

rpavish: Just FYI -- While discussing Cokin filters with a friend locally, he told me that Cokin is going out of business (considered mostly old school replaced by digital editing and sales plumetting). The salesman in my local camera store confirmed that and they were no longer able to order any more Cokin filters, but other mfgs still carried the format. He now carries the P series holders and filters by Promaster and, with the exception of startburst and graduated neutral density filters, etc., the what's available from Cokin is primarily NOS (New old stock).
Not sure how accurate this was, but a glance on Cokin's website seems to indicate otherwise. The number of folks I know using Cokin filters is significant (they do need replacing from time to scratch). A quick look on B&H shows hundreds of Cokin products still available. An urban legend in the making?

Hmmm...could be.

I do know this; with the exception of ND's and Polarizers, and ND grads...I see no reason to put a filter on a lens...(warming filters and cooling and colors) as it's way to easy to do all that in post. With that in mind, I can see the market shrinking drastically as others come to the same conclusion.
