I see Kelby One has a course like the title to my post. I would like feedback on what are the 3-5 most used (or useful) features in Photoshop UHH members use. Now some will say "what is it you want to do?" ... but what I am hoping to do is concentrate on those PS features experienced Lr users recommend. The most recommended feature voiced at the photography group I joined is 'Content Aware'.
Thanks, Bob

Layers (and group of)
Luminosity/selection masking

Content aware or corrective tools are usually used to remove unwanted elements. If that is the 'favorite' tool(s) I would start questioning the attention to detail when capturing a scene.

I agree with Rongnongno. Layers, masking...LR has no such gem.

i was not particularly thrilled with lightroom ..for me it is just a novelty tool to use occasionally to cut corners to get an effect..mostly i like to control my own editing and use Aperture and Affinity from the mac programs..

How about posting a tutorial on "luminosity masks made easy"? Something that has baffled me and might keep you out of hot water here. They seem like a lot of work for very little gain. Kind of an alternative to HDR but with more tasteful results.

Content Aware is certainly one feature I use a lot. I also use NIK plug-ins a lot in Photoshop because you can selectively brush in changes which you can't do in LR. I also use layer adjustments in a lot of post processing.

My usual 'go to' tools in Photoshop are:

1. Adjustment Layers, usually Curves

2. Luminosity Masking

3. The quick selection tool and refine selection.

An occasional novelty tool? Tell that to LR users. While I tried to get hard numbers for market share, I could not but did run across a lot of anecdotes which suggest convincingly that LR dominates the market. This is not to say that those Mac programs might be better for you but overall, photographers opt for Adobe. No, I am not a paid Adobe shill but I do respect what they have accomplished.

LR users do not cut corners. Just looking at posts here, people report that they do at least of 90% of their editing in LR before turning to PS. I will not rehash the features of the programs but I would say that the market place has spoken loudly in favor of LR. You might want to listen.

Bogin Bob, here are my go-to features of PS. Bear in mind that I do about 95% of my developing in LR except that is changing as I use the high-pass and shake reduction filters more and more.

1.) Sharpening with the high-pass and shake reduction filters.
2.) Removing objects with the stamp or healing tools if I cannot do so in LR.
3.) More targeted masking.
4.) Levels tool.

I always copy the background layer to preserve that and work on the copies. I would like to learn more about luminosity masks and no longer use any plugins except one for showing the focus points in LR.

I'm just wondering: if we are talking about image editing, what can LR do that PS can not?

That was my initial impression. I hated it so much. Way too hard to learn, especially since I like opening a program being able to use it immediately. Should not need tutorials or books; should be completely intuitive. Dream on! However, I stumbled through it for months until I discovered Juiieann Kost. Perhaps some day when you have the patience, you might want to revisit LR. I have so much respect for it and am grateful that I learned it.

Thank you for sending this. I tried this sometime ago but dropped for reasons I do not remember. I was probably dealing with too many other learning issues. I will try it again.
