I have been having trouble with several of my photos have color cast on them even in different lighting situations. I am shooting with a Nikon D5100 and mostly shoot with my 55-300mm lens. I took some of a little girl in a field of flowers and when I had them printed she has a yellowish and greenish color cast on her face and greenish on her yellow top. I know that shade can cause color cast but I shot some the other day and it was cloudy and the girl had on a white shirt and it had a blue cast to it. I tried shooting both on auto and manual.. Can someone please help!

Without examples, we'd be guessing.

Post some examples and make sure you click "store original" so we can read the metadata.

Here are some examples. I know that you can fix some color cast in Photoshop elements which is what I edit with but I want to fix the problem before hand not after. I assume it is something to do with the white balance. Thanks

Try dressing her in more neutral color.

I have even got color cast with a white t-shirt which of course was a blue cast to the shirt that was taken on a cloudy day.. I must be doing something wrong. So aggravated.

This may or may not be the answer. First is white balance. Have you tried taking/setting a custom wb? Using a gray card, expodisc, balance smarter or any of the multitude of wb gizmos out there would definately help.

Second, what "picture style" is your camera set to? I shoot canon, so I'm not sure what Nikon refers to it as. My cameras have different styles, i.e, standard, portrait, landscape, monochrome etc. Try changing that.

Hope this helps.

I have tried shooting a picture of a white card but not grey. I have the camera set on vivid and I had been wondering if that was the problem all though sometimes I get really good pictures without any color cast at all.

Setting your camera on certain modes accentuates certain colors that might otherwise be subtle.

My camera has a yellow-red cast to it so I'm constantly lowering the yellows and reds in LR.

If you set your camera to "neutral" and not vivid I bet your issue will get better.

vivid will definately add pop to the colors, I just shot the flower festival at Epcot in vivid. It is almost like using HDR, Switch back to the "standard" setting setting and try again, white balance can be set to either auto or cloudy or sunlight depending on the conditions.

crimesc324 that was my goal for setting my camera to vivid because I love the brighter colors but not on the skin! LOL! I have my white balance set to auto.

I only leave my wb set to "auto" if I'm shooting in Raw. If you set your camera to "Vivid" It will make all of the colors in the picture Vivid including the skin. I would say that the color cast on her chin is from the shirt itself. I had the same thing happen to a girls chin with a bright blue shirt. Not sure why it would show up in odd places though. Try holding up a very bright color up to your chin and see how it reflects on you skin. We used to do it with Dandy Lions when we were kids. That's why "I", myself always wear white when I shoot portraits. My camera always has a red cast, but I can adjust that in my settings or in Photoshop. It's all a learning experience. Just when we think we've figured it out something else pops up:)

It appears that both places are genuine colors reflecting on her skin; both from the dress and the greenery.

Yes the colors are from her Yellow dress and the green in the field and I had on a white t-shirt!

I agree that it seems to be reflections from the environment. I looked at the EXIF data on the last shot, and everything seems to be set for normal. WB is auto and looks fine, judging by the white flowers.

How do I prevent this from happening again? They look ok on the computer but when I had them printed I used shutterfly and they automatically apply enhancements and the photos were awful!
