Canon "IMG_XXXX File Numbering System

A strange little issue came about with my Canon 50D file numbering system. On page 81 of the user manual, it states, "For both JPEG and RAW images, the file name will start with "IMG_XXXX." The extension will be ".JPG for JPEG images and ".CR2" for RAW images." For the longest time my file names would all start with "IMG_XXXX" until about a month ago. Then the file name change to "_MG_XXXX" with the "I" changing to an underscore. I've gone into the 50D menu and did an auto reset and manual reset in the file number menu hoping this would correct the issue, but it didn't. Has anyone experienced this issue?

I'm not a Canonian so this is just a guess. Is it possible you got to 9999 images and the system is protecting you by changing the file name so you do not have duplicate names?

If the camera allows you to make custom file names, you should do that and so every 10000 files you alter the name so no two images have the same filename.

I believe you may have an IMG_9999 on the card. The camera will not overerite any existing files, so It may be dropping the I to make it a unique filename series when "starting over" with IMG_0001.

Try formatting the card in the carera and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info, but I regularly format my CF cards in the camera after I download and backup my pictures. I have also reset the count to 0001 manually. According the the manual, if you reach the count of 9999, the camera will not allow you to take anymore pictures on that card even if you have more space on the card. If you reach 9999 you have to format the card in order to use it in the camera. I have several CF cards and I get the same results on each card.

You changed your sRGB setting in camera to adobe RGB maybe?
I did this at one time with XTI. Took awhile to figure out what was going on.

Hummm, about a month ago, I did change the sRGB setting in the camera to RGB. Sooo, looks like we may have found the problem. OK, were you able to correct the problem or did you just live with it?

I just set my canon 60D to adobe RGB but the Numbering stayed the same. IMG_XXXX.jpg. Tryed again with my Rebel XTI to adobe RGB and it went to _MG XXXX.jpg. Canon only offers two color space - sRGB and adobe RGB. I use sRGB. Choose which one you want and go with that.

About the number of pictures on an SD Card -9999. On my canon 60D if I ever in my life time reach that number of pictures, my camera will just make a new folder and keep on clicking.

I can verify that because the same thing happened to me. I called Canon to talk to technical support about it because I hated the underscore. Easy solution: Switch back to sRGB from Adobe RGB.

Wow, thanks for the information. I was concerned that I unknowingly did something with the file name and that it would only be time before I would do something to make things even worst. Sooo, at least the camera is doing what it is suppose to do, therefore not for me to worry. Now I'll go find something else to worry about.

Thanks again everyone for the assistance.

I didn't bother to see what the manual says but when I reach 9999 the next file on the card goes into a new folder than the camera creates and goes on from there.

Very simple. You have changed your RGB color space setting to Adobe RGB 1998.
