The second one is mostly in heavy shade with sunlight on his face/head. If I got the body light it got grainy and the face would be blown. Even with PP you loose something so I let it go natural. Similar to someone's face being partly lit and partly shaded with shadows.

Thanks, I got this one with his comb up! Most of my Cardinal photos have their comb down.

We feed our cardinals just off our deck. may I show you a few of my pics. I m not great at this but I am willing to share with permission. I really enjoy looking at the cardinal .. Unreal color...The detail of your pic is what I fail to capture...ugh! I like the first shot..the tail is so detailed...great shot.
