Pacifica is a beach community 20 MI outside San Francisco. Was scouting birds to no avail last month, but caught this butterfly instead. It looks similar to a Monarch, but it's a different species.

Tam 150-600, f 9, 1/800, ISO 400, 552MM, hand held. Canon t5i APS-C.

Thank you. I used manual focus (MF), manual exposure (ME), fixed ISO, and had IS turned on. I am finding this combination often works better (than AF and especially AE), even for certain action shots, like surfers and birds, (though not always). The 150-600 Tam has extremely sharp glass when used properly, despite claims to the contrary.

This shot was not too difficult since the butterfly posed for a while. I've been having good success with MF for surfers too, as long as I dial in a certain focus range initially. 30 years with 35mm and 2-1/4 film got me used to MF and ME, so I am comfortable with it. Much greater control and higher keeper rate.

Thank you JoAnneK01. Some of my favorite photo captures were on film during trips to Hawaii (years ago).

Thank you BassmanBruce! Glad you were able to identify the butterfly classification. I learned something new.
