I completely agree, what part of an unsolicited $25,000 piece of jewelry doesn't he understand?

Certainly hits home, with the advent of the 105mm 1.4E.

Actually, if the jewelry and lens are in rough $ balance, it is usually workable. Sometimes wives have expensive hobbies as well, and that can help.

In our house we work on 'quid pro quo' basis. That's Latin for 'twofer'. I get one, she gets two !!

My solution was simple, I just got my wife interested in photography as well so now she understands why we need a new camera or lens or tripod or.......

Yep, my wife has always been interested in photography, and when I unexpectedly got her a used DSLR with a couple of lenses to replace her old Nikon FM2 (sorry N guys it was a Canon) she was very happy.

That didn't let me off the hook for the sparkles though. She deals in antique jewelry. Fortunately she's worth it, and pulls her own weight!

Years ago the diamond in my wife's ring came loose and it was never found. For our 40th anniversary I replaced it with a very nice diamond that rated at the top of the scale for clarity and cut and it really sparkles. She was really surprised and loves it. However, she didn't really know how much it cost until she got it out of me. When she did, buying a couple of lenses after that was no problem at all.

Yep, color, cut and clarity. I don't get to fake it, my wife is a graduate gemologist! But she's definitely worth it!

What she really likes are genuine Russian demantoids....

My wife understands that gold and silver do not match black bodies and lenses.

My wife's only weakness is travel, ,mine is photography, I take my camera along, makes a nice compromise.
