It's a DUH World. Nothing to do with photography, but perhaps funny?
It's a DUH world.
Our local market, The Fresh Market, runs a weekly special. $20 for an entire meal for four. It usually consists of packages of stir fry veggies, meat, fish or chicken, sauce, some grain or noodles and a dessert. Most of the meals have been very good and it gives me a break from "real cooking". So, now the DUH!! I pick up a package of noodles, chicken, sauce and veggies. I did not want the pound cake dessert. I check out and the bill comes to $28+. I inquire and ask about the $20 meal. The cashier says," you did not get the pound cake". I said, "I did not want the pound cake" She says," you have to buy the pound cake to get the special price of $20". I go back and get the pound cake and the bill is now $20. I then asked her, if I give the pound cake away, do I have to return the $8+. At least she laughed!! DUH!!!!!!

"DUH!" is correct. I had the same situation with a local pizzeria because I didn't want the pepperoni on their special. I don't do business with them anymore for that and other reasons.
I would think that in your case, the food store would donate the pound cake to a homeless shelter or some other charitable user.
I think it is funny. I could have easily given it away, but then I would not have the DUH story.
Thanks,
Mark

I've run into this as well... Make me shake my head and laugh every time! Crazy times!

You can baffle your average Walmart cashier by giving them change after the register has told them how much to give you back too. It's right up there with common sense which isn't always that common.
Wally World should remember the old adage, "You get what you pay for".

Remember in the movie "Easy Rider" when Jack Nicholsen asked for toast? Your story reminded me of that.
(For those who don't remember this classic scene, the waitress told him that they didn't have toast. So he ordered a "tuna sandwich on toast, hold the tuna"... )

I believe that the movie was Five Easy Pieces.

It isn't just Walmart. almost every store or business I frequent, I ask the cashier out of curiosity, if they know how to count back change. Very few have any idea at all though a couple say they have heard of it in the past. All rely on what the register says they should give back.

Sounds like we got plenty more political candidates coming up and the voters to put them in office.

All too true, and I think we are showing our age. This is fine with me. I enjoyed growing up in the 50's and 60's. The only thing I would change would be my great granfather's penchant for vaporizing $250,000 in the late 1800's.
I coulda been a contenda.
It's called "The dumbing down of America"!

Too true. I also know which contenda you are talking about.

I believe that's actually illegal. But making it cheaper with the pound cake than without, they are "forcing" you to take the cake -- which is unfair competition to other makers of pound cake. (However, that may only apply to a manufacturer bundling their products. Like Adobe saying, PhotoShop: $400; PhotoShop + Lightroom: $350)
