Finally caught a hummer

I think I may have finally gotten an image I'm happy with. Taken close to my chair on our patio (check the focal length). They (it?) visit the flower pots my wife arranged in addition to our feeder and no longer seem really skittish. I think this is a female Ruby Throated, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Very nice capture. I like the composition, background and slight motion blur! Well done.

Thanks Carol. I'll need to go faster than 1/1000 second to freeze those wings. I would have thought that shutter speed would freeze just about anything in nature! But I do like the slight blur.

Well done! Don't worry about freezing the wings, you need the speed of a flash unit do really do that. This is indeed a Ruby-throat, either a female or a 1st year male who hasn't yet developed his gorget. The Ruby-throated is the only HB that breeds in SE PA. Occasionally we will get a migrating Rufous HB but they are seldomly seen this early. If you keep your feeder up until December, you might attract one.

Thanks for the compliment. Don't give up. I tried for quite a while without much to show for it.

Thank you for your feedback and especially the additional information you have provided. I do have a good flash, but am reluctant to use it - fear of scaring it (them?) off. I would never have thought that any hummers would be around late in the season as December. We normally take our feeder down when most of the leaves are off the trees, but I just may leave it up this year to see if anything comes by.
