Step Up Rings

Does it make a difference to do a step up with one ring i.e. 67-82mm rather than use a set of rings and go through each ring set, i.e. 67-72mm 72-77mm 77-82mm to achieve the step up procedure? (Not sure if a wider gap between the lens and the filter would affect image quality. Thanks for any advice.

I think it MIGHT (not speaking from experience) show on your pictures due to the distance from the lens.

Some others will chime in with their experience I'm sure.

Hi. Thanks. I have a feeling it will make a difference, but thought I'd check it out before purchasing a step up set of 7 rings rather than individual single step up rings.

Adding excessive rings between the filter and lens increases the likelihood of flare developing between them. Use one ring and you will minimize this possibility.

This is especially important when using + diopter close-up filters, or afocal wide angle or tele auxilliary lenses - keeping the distance between the main lens and the close-up/auxillary lens as small as possible. As a side note, using single step rings in a multiple series makes a nice wide angle lens hood.
