When giving critique, the critiquer NEVER KNOWS THE MEANING OF AN IMAGE. the artist only speaks after the last critique has been given, or the critique will be tainted.
A statement from the artist is the prerogative of the artist.
In fact the works by Cindy Sherman don't ever have titles, just numbers so they can be catalogued, let alone an explanation.
The meaning is what we make it and can be different for everybody.
A statement is given when an artists does not feel their work is capable of speaking for itself!!!

I have a skull like this (minus the horns) hanging on my office door. It means 'Keep out!!!'.

No, you're missing the point. That is exactly what I want - something that makes one think. Too me, it just looks like a heavy set woman lying on a blanket outdoors with a tattoo on her thigh and a cow skull covering her crotch. That's it. Nothing here to think about nor do I see a hidden meaning. But... I will say this. It is still a hell of a lot better than the girl kneeling on a bed with that forlorn look in her face shot. Those are a dime a dozen. Even if I don't get something as in this photo, I still like it because it is different. I like "different". The subject does not have to be baring all either. Implied is just fine.

I like the pose but not the crop. I think she should be more centered. Also the hip and skull highlights are too strong.
