I like everything but the glow from the street light. I did crop down out of curiosity to just above the top of the back building and think it prevents the eye from wanting to look up for whatever that is worth. I feel the subject is the lower portion. Well done minniev.

definitely more than one image here. I am liking a landscape crop knocking out the scrapers for a more intimate feeling. Of course to do so is to knock out your juxtaposition of personal vs impersonal (which is kind of my feeling of those scrapers - without character). Also, I am liking the color, detail and the light quality more in the lower half. The scrapers help tell the story however, can't argue that...

Thanks Frank. I will try to tame those lights when I get home with more efficient software and a better monitor.

The main subject is in the very lowest portion, but he is understated. I think the shadows of the people in the coffee shop are also subjects, I'll try the crop!

Thanks for commenting Piet. I did take some landscape wise too, so will look at them. As usual, this is a kitchen sink composition: dawn light, old buildings, bland skyscrapers, the coffee shop with its steamed up windows, the man lying in the street. There was just so much color on the buildings, and the warm light was such a contrast with the sleeping figure on the concrete.

I saw your subject immediately and wasn't going to comment because I inferred he is homeless. If so, it is a heartbreaking and powerful image of social contrasts: having nothing, having excess.

The reason I'm commenting is because I don't actually know this person's status, and thinking about that made me realize I was projecting what I wanted (or didn't want) into the minimal information provided.

So I thought that was worth mentioning: speaking to the power of photos, even if some of what we "see" may only be in our imagination.

The glow from the lamps does not bother me. The light is really nice in this photo and it is reflecting very nicely from the tall buildings. I think they add to the photo and I would not crop them out. If they were not bathed in gorgeous light, they might pose a distraction. Very nice photo. I can't help feel sorry for the fellow who has to sleep on the street. I just can't even imagine what that would be like.

Thanks for commenting Linda. With most of my photos with people in them, I don't know their "real" story, but am making an image that can allow the viewer to see what they will. Sometimes I know a bit, like with "Hope", because I've spent some time talking with them.

We have contentious conversations here sometimes about whether pictures can tell stories. If they make us think, then perhaps they do, even if every viewer doesn't find the same story.

Erich you have emphasized my point to minniev. You see a subject in the upper portion of the frame and I see one in the lower, either lessens the impact of the other so to speak.

Thanks Erich. The light was beautiful, even on the nondescript tall buildings. There may be some more I can do with the lamp glow at home but unsure. The city is so full of contrasts.

Once one has got past the old and the new side by side in the buildings and the guy sleeping on the sidewalk a few paces from from a couple of flash cars and an expensive coffee shop its just a slice of life in any city across the world. Not enough impact to really make the grade for me. If your eyes saw something special in the light little Oly missed it, as cameras have a habit of doing. A warming filter in PS may get you back to what you saw. Would love Floyd to comment on this as it seems to have all the ingredients he requires for "street". I must congratulate you on the processing min its it is a masterpiece and worthy of comment in that respect and the streetlamps should and do glow. If they did not cars would bump into each other more often cos it would be dark huh

At my end your picture has an overall orange cast to it. I made a quick adjustment as an example for your consideration.

==========

I love everything about this image!!! It tells so many stories about humankind!!! The age of artistry vs. efficiency. The urge of Babel-like building - reaching for god or the stars; the insignificance of humankind. The golden light enhances the story. The details are wonderful! The post-processing is perfect for me. When I saw the image, I really took notice of its beauty and it made me soar!

Thanks for the affirmation that I did capture a "slice of life" which is about all I hope for with city shots. In New Orleans, you have a mix of old and new buildings, shops of various types, people of various kinds. And palm trees. Not unlike other coastal cities except for some of the architecture and people in the Quarter and the Ninth Ward which still looks like a zombie apocalypse in places. I expect I'll be able to do a little more with it on my real computer with my real monitor and real software, but doubt it will magically become a masterpiece. Will try the warming filter and see what it does.

Well, ya definitely got rid of the orange, that fiercely orange sunrise is now gone from my otherwise boring scene and it is mid-morning on Canal already! I would need to add in the streetcar and wake that fellow up though. But I do appreciate anyone taking time to work on my images, and you've shown me how to remove sunrise color if I ever need to.
