My best guess is it removes the distortion which takes place in the corners of lenses. Have a look especially in the top right corner where the stars appear to make a line, almost like a bird soaring? If you see that then look on the left corner too where similar shapes can be seen.

Anyone else with a better/ correct idea?

Eugene, it seems to me that your stars are showing the effect of a long exposure more than distortions.
By the way, that is a nice rendition of the Milky Way.

I wanted to know if the firmware update had any practical applications that made it worth while.

Probably better data to correct pin cushion, barrel or other distortion that is in the nature of a particular lens (listed) when converting to a jpeg. It is up to you to make a value determination.
