Adam Lerner answers the question he gets frequently from people wondering if they should "go pro"
Considering the amount of folks here on the hog who buy a DSLR and then want to go into business as a photographer before they understand f/stops...this is probably a good video to watch.

Good video. Adam does a good job covering some of the many considerations while tempering expectations. This is especially true today when access to the technology is so easy and affordable. (If only it was all about technology....)
Like so many things in life, those who do it well make it look easy. Most folks entering the craft professionally have either the requisite technical, creative, networking, business, or interpersonal skills, but rarely do they have more than two of these. And most underestimate the costs involved in getting started. Then with work initially being slow, they too quickly drift away from the skills they have into areas their paucity of customers want to take them.
Great resource, thanks for posting. It could save many a hopeful some heartache by helping them look at all aspects of a unique business before jumping in the wrong end of the pool

You must be kidding.
If you've spent time on the hog you've seen the posts that start with "Help!!! why are my photos too dark!!!"
OR
"Help!!! how do I get my photos blurry like I see in magazines!!?
OR
"I bought this nifty f/5.6 300mm lens for birthdays in low light and now everything is blurry!!! Help!!"
And the list goes on and on.

Helpful yes....suicidal...no :)
The old curmudgeon in me is tired of seeing posts like the following, especially under CraigsList/Photo:
"Hi! My name's Buffy & I just bought this cute little pink camera that has a 10mm-24mm lens so that I don't even have to ever switch lenses, so now I think I am, like, a PRO photographer, and want to take some Senior pictures of my classmates who'll pay me a LOT of money, and like, I can buy some bling for my boyfriend who's a doll, and like maybe he'll take me to Cancun and I can take some pictures of some REAL MODELS there - and then I'll move to New York. Call me."
I apologize if I offended anyone - just tired of the 'Instant Professional' mentality - I've been doing this for a long time, had a little success here and there, but still would really like to be doing this PROFESSIONALLY, full time. Haven't put in all of my 'apprenticeship' yet, at the age of 60 - but 20-somethings can pick up a P & S and declare themselves "professionals."
