I mentioned this Rodney Dangerfield moment on another thread somewhere. Several years ago when I was living in the Chicago suburbs, I was on my way home from work or flying lessons and noticed that the road I had just turned on to had been re-striped. in the middle of the road was a dead raccoon. The road crew painted right over it. I don't recall if the animal was lengthwise or width-wise across the road, but the stripe went almost perfectly down the middle of the body. Talk about no respect.

I've seen a picture like that circulating the internet except it's an opossum not a raccoon. Supposedly taken in Arizona.

A couple of years ago I was heading south from Chicago to visit my son for a weekend at the University of Illinois. It was late in the afternoon and to the right, looking west, there was a farm field being tilled.
The farmer and his John Deere tractor, throwing up clouds of dust, were silhouetted by the setting sun. It was a perfect picture that I didn't take - I was doing 70mph and I hadn't brought my camera anyway.
I always think about that shot. It's a bit like the fish that got away - nobody can appreciate it (or believe it) but you.
You all got any stories about the one that got away?

The one that still burns me is the NM landscape I wanted to shoot, I had a camera with me but we we running later than expected and my first wife talked me out of stopping. She was pretty, but so was that landscape. Now my current wife is more forgiving and understanding about my photo passions, she's a keeper.

I usually don't take my Sony out on the boat when we are going to fish( I lost one that way )and one day a about 6 dolphins became amused with our pontoon boat and spent 1/2 hour circling , jumping and really goofing around our boat. They were so close and so curious , I just get ill at the thought of what great shots I would have had of my sweet friends. I now have a water proof Olympus that I always take with me !!!!

want to see Longhorns? Drive to Fort Worth, Texas, downtown...arrive before 4:00pm and you will catch longhorns being driven by real cowpokes through the streets. Weekdays only, I think. But you could do a search for fort worth attractions.
Take a look at a shot I got:

Best Shot I didn't get was back in the mid-60s, stationed at Cubi Point, Philippines. With a setting sun and a backdrop of ocean, the mountains, and the beautiful Subic Bay, a huge waterspout dangled into the bay. I didn't get that shot because I wasn't interested in cameras yet. Should have been, now I carry mine wherever I go, hoping for more serendipity to happen.

The picture I didn't take because I left my camera home. While on a walk I saw robins bird-bathing in a puddle on the street.

When you said you were stationed at Cubi Point I thought you were going to say something about a bar girl and a stack of coins.

My wife and I were driving along a two lane Texas road, when we saw a vulture cleaning up roadkill up ahead. Not an unusual sight. As we approached he flew up onto one of those Texas ranch overhead name signs...you've seen them...to join his three compadres. Four vultures on a Texas ranch entrance sign...I think that might have made the cover of Texas Monthly!!

Years ago we were on our way to Mo. and we went by this field that had an outhouse right in the middle of the field of sheep. Standing in front of the outhouse door was a sheep like he was waiting to be next. Never saw it again, someone had removed the outhouse. I still laugh and get hacked off at the same time when I rermember that. LOL

I have a picture of about 1/3 to 1/2 a dolphin taken when I was visiting my parents in Florida in Feb for her birthday. The darn things surfaced so quickly that it was impossible to time a shot!

What, a Tennesseean doesn't get up early? Maybe they herd them before noon then. (I lived in Millington for ten years)...

It got smaller when they closed the bases there. An E6 I was stationed with used to refer to the P.I. as Disneyland for the sailors

The shots that got away - after they were processed:

I actually got at least a roll of 36 good shots of a police "SWAT" team taking on a situation where a sniper (drunk and strung out it was later determined) had taken some pot shots at pedestrians early in the morning. One suffered a minor injury- arm I think. This happened in the 70's and such things were rare then, at least southern Ontario. I grabbed my Pentax Spotmatic F and gear and went to where the incident was, a block from my apartment. I was in my early 20's and did not know that I could not do certain things. Like cross police lines. I still don't know why I was allowed to wander and get close to the building when others were not. (Either the police didn't like me, or assumed my semi-professional looking gear meant I was a pro and knew the risks?) There was a large old house, split into apartments. Most tenants were evacuated early on, while the police played a waiting game with the shooter, in the top, 3rd floor apartment, who was not responding to the bullhorn or phone calls. I was near the door of the front of the building when a slightly built, bewildered man in his thirties and in his pyjamas, walked out the door to the front lawn, to be pounced on by a 200 pound cop- (relatively )gently though. It was a protective pounce- I think. It turned out that this man was deaf, had slept through the entire shooting, sirens and crowd outside, then wandered out to see what the fuss was!

Hours later the police, frustrated by the lack of resposne from the sniper, attacked the apartment inside and out (from a fire escape) with tear gas canisters. Shortly after that, the canisters set fire to the apartment, and the third and second floors of the house burned down. The police were able to - am a bit fuzzy on timing so many years later- determine the shooter had killed himself hours earlier, explaining the lack of communication with him.

Since I'd told my employer -the public library - that I could not get to work because the streets were shut down (initially true) and because the film and processing was paid for by my employer, I turned the photos and negatives over to the historian at the library. A few years later I asked for the negatives to amke copies for myself.

They had been lost.
