Auto Focus selection points

Was out shooting today with 5DMarkIII & 100 to 400 lens & 1.4 extender. Wanted to catch BIF. Tried to select 61 point focus option. Unable to do so. Only first four focus options available. Why not able to select 61 point option? It seems that would be the best focus option for BIF using that lens.

I shoot Nikon, but I believe you have limited focus points when you're at F8 plus with that combo.

I believe that's correct. I don't see that combination lens/extender listed in the AF section of the manual (although I could have missed it), but using the same lens/body combination, mine behaves exactly the same way.

Yes DaveO, that's correct. I just think when tracking BIF all 61 focus points would be an easier way to get the shot in focus. I think this warrants a call to Canon.
Thanks for your reply.

TriX, thank you for your reply. I don't know why Canon didn't make all 61 focus points available with that lens/extender combination for photographing BIF.
Thank you again for your reply.

It may be in your manual, not uncommon with other brands I believe. I'm not that familiar with the tech end,but I think this may occur at F8 and above on many.

When the 5dm3 came out it would not autofocus with the camera/lens/1.4 combination you have listed. Have you downloaded the camera firmware that lets this combination autofocus at f8? I have no way of knowing if that will use all 61 points.

At f/8 max aperture I think the best you can get is the center point only, and it may depend on which model of extender as well. It would be nice to have all the AF points work at f/8 but I would imagine that there are both technology and cost issues associated with making all AF points work accurately and quickly with that little light hitting the sensors.
