Hi Viscountdriver;

I've been considering a Nikon P900 as a light weight alternative to my D7200 + Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 combo the weight of which makes it burdensome to carry over long distances. I am curious about your second shot, was it taken handheld and fully zoomed in? I am trying to decide if the image is "fuzzy" because it is out of focus or because it was handheld and therefore the camera was not perfectly still when the image was shot.
Regards,
Garth

I'm with you. Is it hand-held or what?? I have pre-ordered the upcoming Nikon B-700, that looks great on stats, on paper, And as a super-zoom, it will be a welcomed addition to my Photographic armamentarium. An array of gear that's already over-loaded with HEAVY stuff. I will be looking to see what posts you get in returns on this topic. RJM

Doesn't the P-900 have image stabilization / vibration control???

added: the thumbnail images posted don't have any EXIF data attached.
Were they taken at the same focal length?
Also, what was the shutter speed?

Yes the P-900 has image stabilization (VR in Nikon speak) and a focal length of 4.3-357 mm (angle of view equivalent to that of 24-2000 mm lens in 35mm [135] format) it can be very difficult to handhold and not get a "fuzzy" image when the lens is fully zoomed in which is what I assume the OP did in his second image. But, without the EXIF data it is not possible to know the exact set of circumstances at the time the image was taken. Maybe the OP will re-post the image with the EXIF data intact.

No it was on a tripod and fully extended but you are not going to get great pictures at that length.Overall it gives great pictures and just as good as any digital camera I own.Fully extended is a bit of a gimmick but at shorter lengths it is very good.

OK, so that still leaves me with two questions

(1) at what "equivalent focal length" were you working?

(2) at what "equivalent focal length" do you get "great" {or even very good} pictures?

I will be equally interested in the answers to both questions.

What I see doesn't surprise me. I sold my P900 after 3 weeks because while it was fun to be able to see a flea on a gnat's back from 1/4-mile away, if you couldn't get it sharp enough to bother printing--I certainly wouldn't bother printing photo #2--why do it. Bragging rights are fun when you're standing with the guys at the shoot, but they mean nothing if you walk away without any keepers. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

I also have a P900. But at extreme telephoto I still get real sharp images handheld. Not like the one shown. If my camera showed a blurry image like that I would have sent it back.

Well it just gets to show I'm not very good but I knew that.

It would still be helpful if you would tell us what the effective focal length, shutter speed, and aperture were. Those are essential to having a better understanding of what you did. Alternatively, you could repost the images, this time checking "store original".
