my picture is now back in photoshop as a smart object. how can use the healing brush tool on it?
I don't know if the smart object matters but here is how the healing brush works.
Select healing brush from toolbar, hold down ALT key (on PC, or equivalent key on MAC) and click on an area you want to use as the 'source' for replacing what you select with with the brush.
Next, adjust brush size to just larger than the object you wish to 'heal', left click on the area to be healed, move brush as needed. The area you brush over will be replaced with a copy of the area you selected as the source.

You can't use that tool directly on a Smart Object. Just create an empty layer and us the tools on that. Just make sure 'Current and Below' or 'All Layers' is selected for the editing to be effective.
Just use it on a copy of your jpg file. No layers or smart object needed. View the file at 100%. As others said, make the brush a little wider than the object you wish to hide. You can always use the undo button aand try again with a different hardness setting.
