This lighthouse is in Cape Disappointment State Park a few miles north of the Columbia River on the Washington side. I wasn't watching the clock well and got to this lighthouse a little bit later than I would have liked.

Excellent capture Jerry, I love the light and the contrast of the lighthouse and foreground very much, also the composition too..
The strong silhouette with soft light works beautifully in my opinion. The position of the horizontal clouds relative to the top of the lighthouse worked out nicely to accent rather than interfere.
Jerry, I had an 11 ton cutter (sailboat) for 35 years. I remember sailing in the Chesapeake Bay on a late fall day and instantly the clearness disappeared and fog was everywhere I couldn't see past the bow. So, using my depth meter I followed the 30 foot mark for about 20 miles until I heard the Potomac River fog horn. I then headed up the Potomac River and about 5 miles later a massive Coast Guard cutter's crewman shouted down to me with a loudspeaker, "Captain, do you know where you are?" "I said about 20 yards south of the No. 2 marker." He replied, "Right on, have a good trip." I never did see the Coast Guard cutter, and the angle of sound from the ship came from almost straight up. Sailors love lighthouses, and all helpful markers while underway! Your photo warmed my heart. Tony
Beautifully done Erdos. I love the dark silhouette against the soft natural colours of the sunset. I think the addition of the blades of grass is very nice. Very well composed .. and it's such a clever exposure because you the light in the lighthouse is not glaring white. You had a bright sky, a VERY bright lighthouse light and then a dark foreground to deal with and I think you did it perfectly. Kinda makes me wish I was sitting there.
Love this shot! Very well executed.

You got a very nice shot if you were after a silhouette shot. Nice sky and good composition. If you were shooting RAW you could bring out some detail in the lighthouse and the foreground which I like to see but that is just my opinion. You wouldn't want to increase the overall exposure to get this though or you would start to loose the nice color in the sky.

Erdos? Ö Magyar? (Are you Hungarian?)
Thank you for all the nice comments.
It was a nice evening, but with the breeze it was getting chilly quickly, especially since I didn't change to long pants or put on a light jacket. It also was getting dark fairly quickly and I was standing in some weeds and brush that was scratching my legs. :-)
Regarding bringing out the details in the lighthouse, I also took a few series of raw shots at different exposures and combined them with HDR software. While that did bring out details in the shadows, it ended up being just another lighthouse photo. When I looked at all the photos from that evening, I kept coming back to this one, so it became my favorite of the bunch. Sometimes it is better to go with the lighting conditions that are present than fight them.
As for my login name, I use it because of a paper I co-authored that put me on the list of people with an Erdös Number of 2. It's a geeky mathematical thing. (See
http://wwwp.oakland.edu/enp/ ) I am not Hungarian, and don't use the proper spelling (with the "ö") because as a login I want it to be easy.

At the first glance the composition and the phrag grass at the left let me feel the breeze from the north. I was in the scene right off the bat!
That's great impact!

Very nice lighting, which you wouldn't have gotten if you'd left earlier!! I like a lighthouse shot that actually has a light in it.
It is special to see a light in the lighthouse. The Split Rock Lighthouse near Two Harbors Minnesota is only lit once a year on November 10th.
I love the shot and only wish I had such things to shoot here. The only comments I can really make are how I would have shot it. This is a shot I would have used HDR so I could get some foreground lighting control. I don't use HDR much but this would have been the opportunity. Your composition is very nice and I would have also shot in B&W or at least processed it as well as color. Hope I'm not sounding pushy on what I would do. The shot is very nice as it is and I am jealous of your location.
I can feel the breeze as I look at this shot. The simplicity of the horizontal lines of orange have a very calming effect. Nice.
