I have a question that hopefully you Nikon owners can answer. I just got a D7200 and was wondering if there is someway or some update to be able to view/edit the shots in Lightroom or is the Nikon software the only program that reads those files. I also shoot Canon and the goal here is to use a single program for both formats. Any ideas, advice would as always be greatly appreiated!

Pete, make sure you have the latest version of ACR installed in LR. That will view your RAW files. Adobe Bridge views the encapsulated jpg. Once selected the file will open in ACR.

Lightroom supports all major file formats generated by cameras. It's as simple as inserting the card from your camera into a slot on the computer and importing into Lightroom.

I would recommend you take a look at the DNG format from Adobe. Lightroom allows you to convert your raw images to DNG, regardless of what camera they came out of. Since you have multiple formats from your various cameras, this might be something that will simplify your workflow.

Depends on what version of LR you have. If you've got LR 6 or LR CC, then just do an update to LR and it should work on both your Nikon and Canon.

Do you have the latest updates for LR? I suspect you need to check your LR's latest version and update LR. I have both the stand alone and cloud versions, and I routinely receive update information.

According to Adobe's website, you need LR 6.0 or newer for support of D7200 raw files. If you have an earlier version, you are pretty much out of luck unless, as Bruce mentioned, you convert the files to DNG raw format with Adobe's free converter.

(lsimpkins beat me to the Return key. Part of my post is a repeat of his.)

With respect, Bob and Bruce are leaving out a key point. Lightroom must be of a late enough version to match the camera. An Adobe chart provides that information. It says you need Lightroom 6.0 or later for a D7200. Pete is correct that Lightroom has ACR in it, but you update Lightroom and the ACR part is automatic. You can't install the latest ACR in an older Lightroom. Pete and Bruce both allude to a tool Adobe provides for free for those that don't want to spend money upgrading software like Lightroom, Photoshop and Elements. It is called the "Adobe DNG Converter" and, by adding an extra step to your procedures, it losslessly converts your camera's RAW file to an Adobe RAW file that can be used in old Adobe software versions.

Unfortunately, DNG conversion does strip out data. The image data is complete, but there are other sections of the RAW file that DNG looses. Technically, it is not a lossless conversion.

I have run several tests to verify that the image data is not compromised. Ancillary data is stripped.

Here is the link to the Adobe website listing all supported cameras.

Currently Adobe is at Camera Raw 9.6 (or better).

You do not tell us what version of LR you are using. Be sure to check that it is still supported.

You are correct, my version of Lightroom is 5.7.1, and up to date as it's going to get. Looking into Lightroom 6

As usual, you guys have steered me in the right direction and I would like to thank all of you for your knowledge and advice. After looking into this, it looks like Lightroom 6 is the answer to my Canon and Nikon raw issues.

I ran into the same problem when I upgraded to the D7200. LR 3 did not support the new NEF file (nor does View NX2.) If I need to process in LR I convert to a .dng. Download Nikon's Capture NX-d from their site; it's free. You may as well download View NXi, that's free too.

I didn't feel like dropping another $150 for LR 6, so I spent $99 on Aurora and I love it. Of course they only seem to have a Mac version. https://aurorahdr.com/

As others mention latest edition version of Lightroom should open this file just fine. However, some there Windows software may not be able to open it -if that bothers you there is a Nikon "codec" you can down load ( you have to search the Nikon website to find it)

I don't think LR 6 standalone supports D7200, (unless ACR in LR6 has been upped since I tried) I have both LR6 Stand alone and Adobe CC (the whole suite) and I had to use LR6 CC to import from the D7200.
