It was inevitable that the US would top the Olympic medals with its huge size and great population but the UK a great deal smaller with a fraction of its population is very proud to be lying second ahead of China.b
You are correct and have good reason to be proud of your countrymen!
You have every reason to be proud of your athletes. I wish I could say the same for four of ours.

I must confess that I'm not a great sports fan.... But I have enjoyed watching our great nation competing and doing so well. Well done Great Britan.

The USA had about 544 Athletes participate in 2016 Olympics. The largest group of all participating countries. Yes, sometimes bigger is better. The UK did well in the Olympics, and every country should be proud of their medal earners. Many return home with none, including the USA.
I was almost embarrassed about how well the US did. Almost but not quite. LOL
I listened to a guy on BBC radio two last week who was asking why people should celebrate coming second or third. Particularly when they don't have a job and have been funded from the National Lottery and the government for the last four years adding that they are failures not worthy of any credit. Soccer teams go through a series of knockouts until they reach the FA Cup Final. The winning team get the Cup and the individual players get a "Winners medal". The losers get a "Losers medal".
I thought it to be an interesting perspective on what is deemed success or failure.
Well his avater is Popeye, guess he's one of yours.
Well if you listen to Radio2 you deserve all the crap they send out.

You should be very proud and they did a great job. Good for them. I am wondering if flying Eddie will be in the winter Olympics. He had a lot of guts...Rich

Every athlete at the olympics is a winner of their nations competition, to get to compete. So, they are all winners. The main idea is to compete. Most of the competitors know that have no chance of even comming in third. So I guess according to your standard the should not even show up. Actually I think that these athletes have the most courage of all.

You may have heard this story. A queen of England was watching the America's Cup races many years ago, and as the first yacht crossed the finish line, she asked her companion who came in second. "There is no second," was his response."
