OK, Let Me Have It!!! Part 2

Guys,

I apologize for beating this to death (Part 1 went on for 8-9 pages, NOT my intent!). Anyway, I showed a couple of shots of Pgh., PA in the PhotoGallery & got some very positive feedback. A few members suggested that I try to sell the shots to the city, developers, etc.

Just for laughs, I sent an e-mail to the head of the Pgh. Chamber of Commerce. I figured I wouldn't hear back from him & the next day he responded "How much?".

I've done a little research on this site and others & I'm still a little up in the air on what I should do. Family events, special gatherings, etc are one-time deals. This could be a bit more far ranging. If I sell him full copies of the files for a relatively high flat rate, he could conceiveably make as many re-prints as he wants.

Should I charge a lower price upfront and ask for a royalty charge for each re-print? If so, how much? I don't want to appear greedy.

I apologize to those who already responded on the first go around, but I'd like to open some doors here without giving away the store.

PD

Put together a list of options including bare prints in assorted standard sizes, and framed and mounted prints in those same sizes. Its also a good idea to include quantity discounts to stimulate larger orders.
Do not sell the original digital file for less than you would make out of the print sales plus your Artists fees. (I would recommend not selling the original at all if you can avoid it.)

MT,

Thanx! You're on of my top 5 on this site for advice.

I agree. To paraphrase Charleton Heston "They will only get my original files when they pry them from my cold, dead hands".

You could offer to contribute to a local charity, scholorship, the tourism fund or something else, if sales exceed your expectations.

MT is right on the mark here. My suggestion for the future is don't send out a query without the prices already in mind. You wouldn't have sent the query in the first place if you hadn't thought there was a chance of selling.

Thanks guys! The CoC guy contacted me again today asking about the price. I told him that I could provide finished and framed prints and gave him pricing based on various sizes.

I also asked him if he planned on doing re-prints of his own. If this is the case, we can negotiate a price.

Sorry for the interuption. He just responded & said they want copies of the electronic files to use when they want with an acknowledgment to me. I'm thinking ~$500 apiece once I remove the EXIF data.

I missed the first round---but as a former magazine editor, I would not worry about framing. I don't think they care about the frame; they only want the pic. Just protect the pic with mounting board and send it. ALYN

You might consider going low ball with a stipulation for future photography work and find yourself getting some professional gigs where you can charge more, and.... references for other work as well.

CR,

I went ahead & offered a price on copies of the files (w/EXIF data removed). They said they want to do their own re-prints and that I'll get recognition for the original work. I'm waiting to hear back.
