Friend is looking at the Canon EF 70-300MM USM IS lens, She said there is 2 models for sell but she can't find anything that says which is the better lens. She said the difference in price is only $40.00. Model #'s are 0345B002 and 0345B006 can some one explain which is better lens for her. She uses the Canon T3i Camera. She lives in rural area so no camera shop to ask.
Suzanne
It may be that the cheaper one is factory refurbished or is a grey market lens, meaning there is no US warranty. Are they from the same seller? If so, perhaps a phone call could help clear it up.

Hi zuzuanne: Here is a website that tells you all about All of Canon's lenes, it breaks them down by usage and quality. It is very easy to read and follow.

i had the 70-300 very nice lens for the price
I am wanting to buy a new lens also. But I want one that takes nice crisp high resolution photos. For the 70-300 and 75-300 I heard to use a hood with these, the lens does better with a hood. Anyone else heard this?

It's probably a good idea to use a lens hood to protect from stray light coming into the front of the lens and causing problems.
There are some who feel that you should us a lens hood all the time, even when you aren't shooting towards the sun or a light source.

Hi maybe u can help me. I have thesx30 and the rebel 3 I just want a zoom lens for the R3 powerful as the zoom on the sx30. have the 75-300 lens. the sx is 35X . that what I understand.don't understand mm cause they don't tell me X (times)just new and . dumber than dumb. Ric
The sx40 canon is 35x and i think it is 25 or 27mm lens. At 25mm x 35x would equal 875 mm lens to buy a canon 800mm lens you would be spending 5-6 thousand dollars. good luck

Hi ric158: "Oh Boy"... Every thing relating to cameras are rated in MM or mm or milimeters. So very loosly 25.4 mm equals 1 inch. What I know as I understand it the higher the mm the more reach the lens has. Example a 50 mm lens has less reach or magnification than say a 100 mm.. lens would... then a 200 mm would have more reach than the 100 mm and so on and so on.. The higher the mm the closer the subjects appear and the narrower the field of vision... Example with a 50mm you take a picture of a mountain .. you see the whole mountain and on that mountain you see a small dot.... go all the way to say a 500 mm lens you would be able to clearly see a sheep grazing pulling the grass from the ground, but only that section of the mountain. I try not to get lost in the minutia of understanding exactly what mm is but more in how the higher the mm the more the reach or the lower the mm the wider the angle or wide the field of vision, of more importance the quality of the glass. There are other catagories that cover prime lenses, wide angle lenses, telephoto lenses, and specialty lenses such as fish eye and tilt-shift. Within all that you have the cameras sensor factor, full frame or cropped framed, that also affects how you see the picture. I suggest you visit the same website that I told Suzzane about. which is

Both have exactly the same specs and stock (design) numbers. 006 is offered as a Kit. Compare at B&H Photo they have all the specs. Could they be for different size (compact vs. full size) sensors.

Hi again ric: Sorry I couldn't be more help.. There are forum members that know a whole lot more about the subject than I do. Why don't you post your question in the Create New Topic... That way it will bee seen by every one and you will probably find some member that will give you an answer far superior to mine.
Thanks all for your help. She found out that the 006 was foreign made and the 002 was USA made. She ordered the 002.

After reading this thread I think you've already gotten some good advice but I'm going to add my 2 cents' worth anyway. I have the SX30 and a Rebel T1i plus the 75-300mm lens for the Rebel. The 35X zoom on the SX30 is supposedly the mm equivalent of about 840mm. If you shop online you'll see the prices for zoom lenses in that range, as one poster already told you. The advice you got to carry both cameras is exactly what I do. Why? The image quality I get with the T1i is far superior to the SX30 under many conditions. So depending on what I'm shooting and why, that's the camera I grab at that moment. That's also why I chose a lighter-weight Rebel, since I knew I'd be schlepping all my gear all over creation and I'm basically a wimp..... :?
