Resizing in Lightroom

I am getting a bit puzzled by resizing a photo, what I want is 1020 wide (px) x 300 high. When I try to put this size into the export window it changes to 10,20, when I send the image it comes back as the incorrect size for what the person wants to do. How do I get it to stay at 1020 px wide, this seems to be where the problem lies. Your help, as always, much appreciated.

I have tried following an online article on this but it still changes to 10,20.

What version of Lightroom do you use? On LR CC, in Export, under Image Sizing, I select Resize to Fit and then Long Edge and enter 1500 in the pixels box (for Retna displays and uploading to the web as a jpg). What I get is typically 1500 x 1125. Using 1020 on the long edge gets me a proportional 762 height. Wouldn't the 1020 x 300 be distorted?

IS the picture in that ratio to start with?

Why not crop it to those pixel dimensions and then just export it normally?

What are your original pixel dimensions?

By way of example, I took an image that is 7360x4912.
In Lightroom's Crop And Straighten tool, (Press R on the keyboard to make it active), I first click on the padlock to lock the aspect ratio.
Then I click on Original, which opens a drop down list. In the middle of the list I click on Enter Custom . . .
I typed in the width and height - using your numbers, 1020 in the first field, 300 in the second.
It resolved down to 10.20 x 3 - which RPavich showed in his screen capture.

The resulting crop will be locked at that shape. If you press the letter I on the keyboard, you will cycle through the overlay in the upper left corner of your image. One of the 4 default choices will display your pixel dimensions. When you drag the crop window around to place it and resize it, the width and height numbers will change, but the shape will not. which is exactly what you want.

When you are done cropping, your image is already the right aspect ratio (shape, or length x width). I did not crop my image on the long side, so it is 7356x2164, which is the same aspect as 1020x300.

To export this image at exactly 1020 on the long side, just open the export dialog and use the following settings:

Export to - hard drive
image format - jpeg
quality - 80
color space - sRGB
Limit file size to - unchecked
resize to fit - long edge; 1020 pixels
Resolution - dependent on destination. This is irrelevant if for screen. If you are printing, 360 ppi for small prints and lower for larger prints.

This should work just fine.

When I put the 1020 x 300 into the export box it changes to 10,20, this is what I put then it keeps coming back to me saying the dimensions are incorrect. I use the latest CC version. The picture is for a banner heading on a letterhead and identical on a web page.

When you say what are the original dimensions - do I get this from the exif data, sorry feel so thick at times. I really appreciate all of your help.

From what I gathered of your post, you are trying to specify both H and W and yet you file is not set to those specs. Enter the LONG side and let the software choose the short side or crop your photo to the size/aspect you need. Entering only the Long side info is going to be both easier and much faster and should work fine. Best of luck!

Thank you all so much, I will have another go and if it comes back again from the recipient, then there is nothing more I can do. Thank you.

Hi Linda,

First of all take a deep breath & relax.

Now open up your image in LR (I use the latest version too) & click on develop.

Next click on tool / crop on the top tool bar & then on the righ panel click on the lock symbol. Then select custom size & then adjust the area directly on your image.

Once done with this you can click on export & either type in the width & height in the dimensions or export as is.
If you type in the dimensions, you get what you mentioned.
If you do not specify the dimensions, you image will be the correct ratio that you require & can be resized by dragging the corner of the image after it is placed on the document.

I do hope this post is of help to you.

Good luck.
Regs,
Keyur

Seems like we are making this way to complicated. In the Development Module go to File, Export. Go to Image sizing and check Resize to Fit. Then select Width and Height (two boxes will open), or Long Edge or Short Edge as necessary (one box opens) and type in the desired dimensions.
