I Have a Pentax K100D Super converted to IR Lots of Fun shooting IR
I concur that the book by Deborah Sandidge is a good one pulling together the surreal world of IR - IR is the unseen to the human eye. I have a copy. But, there is a lot of free info out there to inform you... make it easy on your self, allow Deborah to cook it for you... She lives in Orlando. Another is Infrared Nude Photography byJoseph Paduano, I bought mine from
www.betterworldbooks.com for $9 including shipping. BWB is an excellent source of books on any subject... they even have many excellent titles 4/$12 including shipping !!!
Once you take an IR you need to do some PP, PostProcessing, and for that I highly recommend "Topaz B&W and More" - make life easy on your self.
Again, because of two requirements set forth by "jmccl", Toe Dipping and low$, use a low cost filter (not a $70 Hoyl) on a non-converted-camera/with-tripod. A $9 58mm 650 filter is at (650 is at the edge of IR/visible and is best for non converted cameras lets thru a lot more light)

Then if you like IR go with one or none of the IR camera suggestions above. OR get a early G series Canon and follow the "
http://www.kleptography.com/notes-irconvert.htm" project.
I saw a stepwise conversion of a Sony DSLR and was tempted, but my use of my G2 Canon IR goes and comes.. a now and then thing... my philosophy is why invest big bucks for something you do not use a lot and the low cost G-2 conversion does a does a fine job. I might add, the conversion is a challenge, but fun project giving a sense of accomplishment.
