If I understand your question, scanners and cameras are the primary import devices for photo programs.

You can take the pictures with film and digital cameras, video camcorders, mobile phones, tablets(iPad, etc). For some of the devices, cables or a card reader is necessary to transfer the images to the computer to be edited with editing software. Mobile phones and tablets usually have apps to edit pictures so no transfering is needed. A scanner can scan negatives and positives(slides, transparencies)or prints to the computer.

Tripod, intervalometer, IR and Ultra Sonic triggers, high speed flashes, exposure meters, and my favorite, a colormeter.
