Sometimes people like the validation that comes from winning or nearly winning contests. Sometimes clients like to see a wall peppered with award certificates and plaques. They build confidence in the photographer from their perspective.
Awards are a confidence builder for most people. I'm still running on the rush of winning a bunch of awards in 1974.
