My name is Chaxl; occasionally I'll post on here seeking advice on camera settings and/or techniques. In a few days my parents and I are going to Graceland and touring Elvis's mansion. being both the biggest Elvis fan and the photographer of the family, I don't want to use the wrong settings, especially when it's a 12 hour drive. Online I've read that photography is allowed throughout the house as long as there's no flash. My main question is what would be the most proper setting for indoor sots of the mansion without the flash. I don't own an SLR, but I am very satisfied with my Canon Powershot SX50. 90% of he time when I shoot, I use the 'Program' mode. Is this OK with indoor shots? Should my White Balance be on Florescence? What about my ISO as I don't want my photos to be grainy.

Thanks,, and any help would be much appreciated,
Chaxl

Hi Chaxl. I only have one setting on my SX50 & I use it for everything. I use 'P' mode, ISO 200, & Auto WB. Just use 'P' mode like you have been doing, & you'll get some great pics of Graceland (I'm a fan, too). Earl.

Going to the "Nagahyde home". *(I still have my original "Mr. Naga" in the back of my car!)

Leave WB on auto since there us so many different types of lighting. Fix any problems later.

You might play with the iso value for the same reason. Some things are inside, some outside, some with assorted lighting, etc.

One thing kind of need are the record album area, (I had no idea he had so many!), the grave site, the car area, and the airplane area.

I seem to recall the car area as the darkest area and nay need to raise iso value more-so. The album area might be also.

The planes are actually owned by someone else and from what I heard, we're suppose to be removed. I don't really see how they could short of like when they brought them there.

They have shuttles vans to carry you across the street.

Enjoy!

Because ov the ever changing lighting conditions I would leave it on P, auto WB and auto ISO.
The program matrix should do the best the camera can do in the various conditions. For example if the ISO is 100 or 200 but it is too dark for a shot at a reasonable speed then more likely camera shake will degrade the photo beyond usability. Yes it migt be a bit more grainy than you like but some PP can fix that a little bit and at least you have a steady shot. And in bright situations the camera will adjust to lower ISO and faster shutter and smaller aperture per the program parameters to get the best the camera can do. You might try several shots, one with all auto and a few with other settings and see what works for you but no one setting can handle all the lighting situations that will be encountered inside and out.
PS Take my wife she is a super fan of Elvis and has not been there yet.

Before you go, do some shots around the inside of your house in low and bright light. My first suggestion is try shooting with the white balance and iso set in "Auto". Putting on the blue suede shoes might not be a bad idea...good luck.

The SX50 has a setting for "night shots without flash." I use it quite a bit. It does several shots and makes a composite that's pretty good. As long as nothing moves, the final images are quite good. I switch to that whenever I'm in low light as I don't like the effects of flash.

When I was there, I wished I had a wide angle lens. The mansion is small, and you don't have a lot of room to work with. The lighting in the car museum is pretty dim.

The SX-50 may not be wide enough for the space. I think you can get some satisfying results, though. Try seeing a narrower image rather than getting frustrated that you can't get it all in one shot. Consider practicing making a pano with the camera in the portrait orientation, hand held and then try a few of those while you're there, when you can;t get a wide enough shot. I recall, no tripods inside at Graceland.

Thanks, and I'd assume the inside house lights will act as my flash?

For one I am physically challenged and have a min tripod attached to my power chair. With use of only one arm, it'd.be difficult for me yo use a slr. I use a remote to shoot as its less shaky.
