Took this one last week before the moon showed back up. Unfortunately I could not back up far enough to get the oak trees in full view, I was using the tokina 11-16mm dx lens on the D600 set to 16mm. ISO 3200 20 seconds F/4.5 WB set to 3200K

To pre-focus, are you using Live View at max magnification, with a loupe? Best way to get your stars tack sharp.

I like shots like these, perhaps one day I will try it if I find myself somewhere without light pollution.

I've tried live view but never with a loupe. I have a hashtag mark on my lens barrel from prefocusing to infinity during the day time, well beyond the infinity mark on the barrel it's self. I now shot in the F/4 range as it seems to be sharper than F/2.8 which I used before. As long as the stars are pin points in the middle of my image I'm happy. At 20 seconds you can see the outside of the image the stars start to elongate, at 25 seconds they all start to get longer when I'm shooting at 16mm.

Hey Brenda, I use DarkSky Finder to help me out, for the darkest spots in my area or areas I travel.. May help you as well. http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ Unfortunately I have plenty of light pollution in my background, but this can help the photo in some situations..
