I have an interesting electronic device on all my music-listening systems. Called a sh*t-kicker diode, it detects country music and puts it straight to ground.

Eric, Did you go to NGC in Dahlonega? Question based on your "title" above your avatar.

Thanks

Nope. NGC in this case refers to Dreyer's 1888 "New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars." The object known as NGC 1514 is a very pretty planetary nebula in the constellation Taurus. It's an interesting object for a couple of reasons:

1. It "blinks." This means the nebula and the parent star are close to the same magnitude in brightness. Due to the physical characteristics of the human eye and the process known as "averted vision," the nebula is easily seen when you don't look directly at the central star, but disappears from view when you do. Several planetary nebulae exhibit this behavior and NGC 6826 in Cygnus is known as the Blinking Nebula.

2. It responds very well to narrow band filters that block most light except for the light found at specific spectral bands. The O-III filter only passes light from doubly-ionized oxygen and the hydrogen-alpha and hydrogen-beta lines. Emission nebulae (nebulae that glow due to the ionization of the gas and not, like the name implies, reflection of starlight) emit most of their light in these spectral ranges. It's always a lot of fun to take a telescope newbie, let him look at NGC 1514 without and then with a filter, and hear his exclamation of surprise as the filter makes the nebula the most obvious thing in the field of view.

As one of my favorite objects to view, ngc1514 has been my online handle for more than 30 years.

I've known NGC (North Georgia College) astronomers, but I've never used the telescope on campus. I believe they, like the Hard Labor Creek Observatory for GSU, have a 16" Boller and Chivens scope. It's the same size as my own scope - a 16" Starmaster.

And yes, I *AM* a geek.

When things get complicated in life or I find myself in some sort of distress I always go to country music, and play it backwards.

Love Country Music...that's partly why I live in Nashville.
But if your a hardcore Country fan, I'd recommend listening to WSM Radio "The Air Castle of the South" which began broadcasting The Grand Ole Opry way back in 1925. They now stream every show online Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm (central time) as well as their regular programming.
