I have been asked to take nudes of a 26 year old friend. These are only nudes. No sex activities or intent. I don't want to buy a printer for this. Prefer to send them to a professional lab. Any suggestions? Of course, quality is paramount but pricing, discretion and image security are important.

Thanks.

This is a good question. I'll be watching for the answer. In the past I've had 35mm film developed by discount retail stores like K-Mart that were of a personal nature and didn't have any problems. But I don't know what would or might happen in this day and age. Probably nothing.

I would count on anything you send through a retail outlet being public. Years ago when I worked in a Camera Shop, there were staff members who were morbidly fascinated with customers' photos. Then, they could only look. With digital....! I would look for a custom lab, preferably one that has a good reputation with Pros or on this site.

Contact the printer to find out what their policy is concerning images with nudity. Some printers simply don't care, some are okay as long as it is not obvious pornography, and some refuse to work with any nudity whatsoever.

I'd check with the lab first, although with an adult model the problems might be less. If you're shooting the classic baby on a bear skin rug, be careful! There've been cases of parents or grandparents who've been hassled for shooting their OWN small child in the bath.

Will these photos be of a male or female?

This topic got me to wondering how a female lab person would react to male nudes. Would they make a photo for themselves?

Many years ago, the eighties, a small custom photo lab in Salt Lake City had a photo enlarger that I was interested in.

Before we went into the locked darkroom the owner ask me if I had any problems with nude photos? I soon learned why he ask the question. The walls were plaster with nude photos. He said, he did a lot of custom printing for the local pro's and other people who wanted to remain anonymous. And those on the walls were acquired over time and from only the anonymous. I really wondered about that statement. He went on to point out some of the photos and said, they were done by one of his best clients, who is a lesbian.

He also said, his darkroom is off limits to everyone and when two locals become interested in the enlarger, he moved it into the lobby both times so they could look at it.

But since I lived three hundred miles away, he decided not to haul it out again, and that's how I got to see his private collection.

The collection was filled with pornography and I didn't notice anyone that seemed underage.

Thinking about it today, those photos would of made for an interesting book. This guy wasn't real choosey about looks.

I would print them myself. That way you have total control over the entire process and nothing gets left out in the public view for something unwanted to happen to the files.

If you have a close friend who has a good quality printer may help. I was never in a situation like this, but I have a personal friend who is in printing budiness. I would have approached to him.

Politely tell your friend that you are not interested and then move on. There is nothing to be gained by your taking the nude photos and doing so could very likely cause you problems later on.. If I were you, I'd pass !

Well hate to sound dull.... but.... take photo of girl with a skin color palette previously printed at you Walgreen's. This allows a match. A photo of her with the pallett gives you a goal. My favorite Walgreen's prints as you watch... you know only one copy. I have used the color match before and it works well. (ask before hand if it would bother the Clark... my lady is a hobby photographer and serious about her work)
KISS.. Keep it simple

The virtue of women being photographed young... well they grow old and see what once was with pride. I have a photo on my wall taken in 1985!! Mary is more the grandma look now... beautiful 9.99 out of 10 in 85!! Me? yes, but not nude, fully loaded with camping gear... waist 34, matured now to 38 with a little overhang.. was I that handsome?? Oh well, working on a clock that runs backwards.. no luck yet.

PS: I think Nude photography is one of the more difficult photo tasks.
