D7200 Raw File Conversion for LR5

OK, got really excited about shooting with my new D7200. Shot a number of photos this AM only to find out LR5 does not support the camera. So I downloaded the Adobe DNG Converter. Are there better options than using the Adobe Converter? Is there a degradation in the photo quality with the converter? Is it best to bite the bullet and move to LR6 or CC? Help!! Floyd2

Bite the bullet. Personally, I wouldn't want to be saddled with converting all of my photos before I can even see them. To answer your question about DNG file conversion, no, the quality remains the same. But any coding that is in each file exclusive to the Nikon raw image file will be stripped away. In other words, every camera make and model creates raw files that has code in it that is exclusive to them. Adobe reverse engineers these coded files, but not all of the code is extracted and used by Adobe. Much of the code is used exclusively by the software programs that is supplied with each camera by the manufacturer.

I use Adobe CC 6.1 and the help camera is listed as compatible with raw uploads. Adobe now offers a monthly fee to use the very latest versions of LR and PS etc at nominal rates ... constant upgrades included. I'm talking 9.99 / month or $32/mo for the entire Adobe lineup of programs. Have you done the updates on a regular basis? There are constant update (as opposed to upgrades) for free.

TWR25, yes, I update when available. I did use the Adobe Converter this AM and it produced a quality conversion however its another step in the process.

Nikon View NX2 or Capture NXD. They are both excellent programs and can be downloaded for free.

Have you gone onto the Adobe web site and updated your LR5 with the latest ACR version. This will include conversions for the now very old D7200 camera. It will even include those for the D500.

While the latest version of ACR is compatible with the new cameras, it may not be compatible with the older version of Lightroom.
The information you lose using DNG converter is primarily used by Nikon software such as NX-d. It allows the software to open the raw image using the camera settings. If you use Lightroom, you will never notice the difference.
DNG converter takes just a couple of clicks and a few minutes of your time. I use PhotoShop CS5 and batch convert everything to DNG. While the creative cloud software rental does keep you up to date with all the new features, I (and probably many others) haven't even scratched the surface of all the old features.
To each their own. DNG converter works, which gives you the choice of whether or not to upgrade your present software. You can always try it and upgrade at a later date if it doesn't work for you.

I thought the d7200 came out only in 2014 ? I'm about to buy it from B&H after selling my d200, now im wondering if i should hold back and wait for newer dslr.

switchman - Wow is this 7200 a step up from the 5300 that I am now using as a backup. Everything is BETTER, MUCH BETTER

Floyd2; I'm sure its a big improvement as well from d200. I've been using a Fuji X-T1 for more than a year but i go back all the time to d200 for focus speed, fuji has the better IQ. Big difference with sensor though.
