Welcome to UHH! Most of the people here are Canon and Nikon users/advocates, but I have always used Pentax SLR's, film and digital, and find them easy to use (intuitive) and give the most bang for the buck. For the past 5 or 6 years all their DSLR models have incorporated the shake reduction feature in the camera body, not the lens. Pentax lenses have always been known for their quality and will generally sell for less since they do not contain the shake reduction mechanism. Another good feature is that all the older Pentax lenses will work on the new camera bodies and can make use of the shake reduction technology. If budget is a concern, I would definitely encourage you to take a look at Pentax products. It is also very advisable to actually lay your hands on any camera model to see how it feels as far as grip and easily reached and understandable controls go.

Thanks guys, for all the valuable info. You can bet I'm filing it away for future reference! (Of course, if the camera universe is anything like the computer universe, we may get new info this week that'll make last week's obsolete! LOL)

Since you have already made up your mind about the Canon 80D I would recommend that you visit a local camera shop and ask to have the camera in your hand. You could then appreciate if the camera is right for you and has the ergonomics you like. It will take you some time to read and learn the most useful functions of the new camera and then go and practice and if necessary take notes.
Cameta offers a one year warranty in all their refurb items. Others like Adorama only offer a three months warranty period which is exactly what the original importer offers. I have had very good experience with refub lenses and cameras.
Good luck to you and welcome to the forum.

I was thinking about Pentax, too, when I saw some of the online prices and reviews. The (fairly) local store (about 30 miles) I mentioned is going to be one of my stops this week or next, and I definitely like the idea of actually picking up the cameras and finding out what "feels good."

(Of course, if an unkown rich uncle passes on and leaves me the Taj Mahal, I'm going to buy one of everything!)

Welcome, princedugan. Have fun, and don't overlook the features offered by Pentax.

Hi all ... Larry Prince here. Wannabe hobbyist. 70 yrs. old, retired. When I was a youngster my Mom got me an Olympus OM-10. Took a couple of college electives in photography. Loved it, but life took me elsewhere and I never pursued it. Want to pursue it now, but must remain budget conscious too. Don't even have a camera yet, but would like some pointers on a recommended entry-level (with room for growth!) DSLR ... and sensible accessories. Probably looking at stills only for now, but again, "room for growth" is the name of the game ... Motion shooting is not out of the question. Thanks for "listening" LOL!

Welcome! It's a great avocation, lots to learn, use your artistic side. Suggest a look at Sony. They're smaller and kits don't get as big, but the 80d is fast and is a good choice. Have fun!

hi and welcome.
the good choices are endless and each of us has our favorite. i'm a sony man so here is my suggestion.
start with a dslr [digital single lens reflex] camera. a sony a- 550 or a- 580 are good bets, they can be had cheaply used from adorama, b&h, or keh. the guys here will vouch for them. sony makes a good line of lenses, plus you can choose from a nice line of used Minolta maxxum linses that fit sony a cameras.
so for a reasonal price you can get started , in time you'll know how or if to upgrade. in the meantime you'll have a few years of happy shooting.

I would suggest the Sony A6000 with two lenses--this is a mirrorless E mount camera. The Sony A68 just came out and comes with one lens--this is an A mount camera.

Seriously consider looking at Olympus Mirrorless. Some models are retro styling and nearly the same size as your OM-10. The Olympus OM-D EM-5 is almost identical to your OM-10.

I purchase my first Olympus OM-1 in 1972, and while I have owned almost every other make and model of camera, my primary loyalties have been to the most creative camera maker out there... Olympus. I still own a half dozen Olympus film camera's and I also own a couple of Olympus digital camera's. I have purchased and shot almost every Olympus DSLR since 2003 (The Evolt E-1 Pro), and moved on to the mirrorless PEN and OM-D models.

The newest PEN in the stable is the 20Mp retro PEN F, which looks just like the PEN F half frame film camera in the 60's.

Welcome abroad!
