There were 2 USS Laffey's. The one referenced here is DD 724! Not only did the Laffey survive the Kamikaze attack, it was at Utah beach on D-Day. While there they were hit by an 8" shell just above the waterline. It never detonated. Crew members went below deck and pushed the shell out of the ship! Basic repairs were made at a British ship yard and the Laffey eventually sailed for home for permanent repair. It was after this repair that the Laffey sailed off for the Pacific and was engaged in the world's last great Naval Battle! The USS Laffey DD 724 and crew continued to serve honorably during both Korea and Viet Nam. The Laffey is a currently a floating Museum at Patriots Point in South Carolina.
My father served aboard the Laffey on D Day and was one of the crew members who shoved the shell out of the ship in into the ocean!

Amazing history. Was your Dad on the ship during the attack in the Pacific?

I was stationed on the Laffey from 1970 to 1971, made one "Med" cruise as well as cruises to the Caribbean. My general quarters station when I first got on board was trainer in MT 51 which is the forward gun mount. As I was a radioman they later changed my general quarters station to the radio shack. Last year my wife and I made the drive down to Charleston to do a tour of the Laffey. The Laffey is the only ship left of its class left still floating. It brought back a lot of memories of a life time ago when I was just 19 years old.

My ship, the USS Earl V Johnson- DE 702, was ordered to do "Picket Duty" in support of the landings off Okinawa at about the same time, but luckily we were never hit, although there were some near misses. I was a Machinest Mate in the engine room. The scariest days of my life!

The War in the Pacific was something today's generation cannot even imagine. I was born in '49 and didn't realize what the men I grew up around went through, and they didn't tend to talk about it The only evidence was one of Dad's h.s. football players who was also a teacher who had a plate in his forehead and had to tape over it every day. He'd gotten that in Korea. It was a generation of heroes and us kids really didn't realize it.

Mahalo for posting. Even after watching this short video I can't imagine the horrors these men went through. My dad had served in the Navy during WW II and he never talked about what he and others went through.

CAMERA FOOTAGE OF KAMIKAZE ATTACK IN 1945

If this doesn't get your attention, NOTHING WILL.

AMAZING FOOTAGE OF THE ATTACKS.

KAMIKAZE ATTACK IN 1945
This is incredible actual footage during the 80-minute attack on the U.S.S.
Laffey. About the best naval footage ever shot by a Navy cameraman.

The camera was in the gun turret under attack. It's Amazing!
The U.S.S. Laffey, "the ship that would not die", was hit by 6 Kamikazes and 4 bombs, but remained afloat after an 80 minute battle that included 22 Kamikaze attacks.
Click on the link below, and then click on the photo of gun turret to activate the video.

That was the most amazing footage I have ever seen of actual combat. All of Hollywood's special effects come in a distant second.

That's still quite a part of history....shoving out an unexploded shell.

I was going to ask if this was the ship at Patriots Point. I've been all through the ship as well as the sub and the carrier.
