been trying to learn curves. is there anyway in curves to only affect the area between the squares i made (one for dark one for the light)? (without using a selection tool)
when i click on the line up or down between my "clicks" it changes the lighting of the whole picture.
thank you

Moving the line anywhere along it's length will change brightness/contrast of "the whole picture". If you want to change only a certain area, select that area first with one of the selection tools i.e., "Marquee" or "Lasso", then move the line.

A simple solution: use 'blend if' on your layer that way only what if lighter/darker than (range) is affected.

The solution above does wonder but where it really shine is when you use a luminosity mask at the same time.

A curves adjustment layer, by default, has a layer mask. With the mask selected, paint black with a desired size and hardness brush on the area of the image you want unaffected by the curves adjustment.

Right Click on the Curves layer (not the mask) > Layer Options, Blend If is at the lower part of the dialog box. BTW, the small triangle shaped Icons (Black & White ) below "This later" & "Underlying layer" can be split apart for more control by holding down the OPT/ALT key, then sliding the inner most part of the triangle inward.
